“LEXUS! WAKE UP!” She shakes her but gets no response.

“MERCY! I need you to focus. What is Lucy’s birthday?” She shakes her head at me, coughing on the smoke that is filling the room faster now.

“We gotta go, Spark. Down that hall, the first door on the left. The panel on the back of the closet moves when pushed.” He turns and jogs out the way we came.

“Mercedes, I need her birthday. It’s the code to get her out!” She pushes past me and runs to the room Viper indicated.

The panel is still open, and the screen on the door is flashing with a tempter warning. Mercy types in the numbers, and the latch opens. I grab the door and pull.

“Lucy!” Mercy cries out when she pulls a blanket and stuffed lion out, but no Lucy.

“No, please, God no.” She starts to sob, and I move her out of the way to crawl into the small room.

“Lucy? Baby, are you hiding? Your mommy is really worried.” I move a small chair and find her huddled in a corner.

Big brown eyes blink up at me.

“Mommy?”

“SPARK!” I pick her up and back out of the room.

“WE GOTTA GO!” Viper is struggling with Mercy as I carry Lucy out of the house.

“NO! I can’t leave her.” I stand in front of Mercy, but she’s blinded by grief.

“Mommy!” Lucy’s voice snaps her out of it, and I put the little girl down to run to her mama.

“Oh, my sweet girl.” She falls to her knees and hugs her.

“Lexy?” I turn to Viper, but he shakes his head.

Fuck.

CHAPTERSEVENTEEN

MERCEDES

Arms are pulling at me,and people are talking around me, but all I know is my little girl is in my arms. I hold her tightly and shake my head. They can’t have her!

“Mercy, we gotta go!” Spark’s words break through my fog, and I kiss Lucy’s temple.

“Are you ok, baby? Doesn’t anything hurt?” I look her over quickly before taking her hand in mine and guiding her to the truck where Viper is sitting in the driver’s seat, ready to go.

“I’m a little hungry. Auntie Lexy said I could have a snack when you got here.” I frown and look around for my sister.

“We can get you something soon. We’re going for a ride. These are Mommy’s friends. Issac and…” I trail off, not knowing Viper’s real name.

“Micah, hello, little lady. Do you like tacos? I know a great spot with fried ice cream.” Lucy bounces up and down on the seat, clapping her little hands.

“Yummy! Taco’s Mommy?” I smile and nod.

“Sure, baby. Let’s get your seatbelt on, and then I’ll find Auntie Lexy so we can go.” Speak clears his throat and shakes his head.

No.

I finish buckling her in and close the door before turning away. My chest starts to hurt, and tears burn my eyes.

“I’m so sorry, Lass.” Spark hugs me, but I feel numb.
