“Are we set?” Dad asks, entering the room in full tactical gear.

“Where you think you’re going, Viejo?” Sarah stops him with a frown on her face.

Pa and Ma follow behind him, and they look just as grumpy as Sarah.

“Eejit says he’s helping get our grand-baby back. Want to relive his glory days.” Pa crosses his arms, and Ma sighs.

“I ain’t that old. I retired cause I wanted to, not cause I was useless. So if I want to back my son up, I will dammit. Besides, my mother is still working and is almost seventy.” I roll my eyes at my family drama and focus on Mercy.

She had a few minutes to meet Sarah, and they seemed to get along well enough. She’s watching the interaction with a strange look on her face.

“What’s wrong, lass?” I run my hand down her cheek slowly.

“Is this how a family is supposed to act together?” I tilt my head and glance at mine one more time before answering.

“A dysfunctional one full of unconditional love, absolutely.” I turn back with a slight grin.

“Then I’m proud to be a part of it.” I kiss her softly.

“Let’s go get the rest of our family back.”

CHAPTERTWENTY-ONE

MERCEDES

We pullup to what I can only describe as a mansion in a very populated neighborhood. It’s almost midnight, so it’s dark and quiet. I have no idea who owns this house, but Lilith has clearly been expanding things since Moses disappeared.

“Any information on the owners yet?” I ask into the surveillance device Glitch placed on me.

“I have my suspicion, but we’re still digging through all the shell companies. Are you sure Deacon can’t help?” Spark and about all the others on the open comm laugh.

“Keep my kid out of this. He’s got little league practice in the morning.” Wolf growls.

“I don’t need my grandson’s help,” Abel grumbles, and I frown.

“I’ll explain later,” Spark says as we park in the driveway next to the single car that I recognize immediately.

“That fucking bitch!” I climb out and slam the door.

“Stealth! Christ on a cracker Spark, stop her!” Abel hisses, and I ignore him and Spark as I stomp my way over to my father’s classic sixty-eight El Camino.

“It’s still exactly like I remember it,” I whisper as I check it out quickly, and when I spot the keys on the seat, I get furious.

The car is in mint condition and should have less than fifty thousand miles on the original engine. Dad used it to cruise car shows a few miles a year and always towed it on a flatbed for long travel.

This bitch said she’d sold it years ago.

I turn for the house, full of rage. For my father’s untimely death, for my sisters, and for Lucy. All because of the demon that once forced me to call her mother.

“I’ll kill her.” I seethe.

“We have movement back east corner. Heat detectors show ten people in the house. Seven are armed. Two are waiting by the door. They’ve been watching your little show, Mercy. I suggest you knock.” Abel’s voice sounds amused, which, I’ve been warned, means trouble.

I slam my fist on the door.

“Open up your fucking puta!” I scream.

“Mercy!” Spark tries to pull me back, but I shake him off.
