The burning pain was overwhelming, and Clara fought to stay conscious.

“Let’s get you to the hospital,” one of them said. “We’re going to lift you up and put you on the gurney.”

“Who’s going to take care of Zeke?” Clara asked.

“I’ve got him,” Dillon said. “He’ll be safe with me.”

“What about me?” John asked the paramedics.

“They’ll be another bus coming soon for you,” one of the paramedics said.

Just then the police arrived.

“What happened?” one of the officers asked.

“You can interview the victim at the hospital,” the paramedic said, forcefully. “We have to get her there, now. She’s losing a lot of blood.”

“This maniac attacked me for no reason,” John screamed. “I demand that you arrest him.”

Clara tried to hold onto consciousness on the ride to the hospital. All she could think about was Zeke. Dillon said that he would take care of Zeke, but she was still scared. What if John got out of the hospital and convinced the cops that he was innocent? John would take Zeke away from her.

She was rushed into surgery as soon as she got to the hospital. Clara woke up in an intensive care unit, disoriented.

She saw Dillon sitting in the chair by the bed.

“Zeke,” Clara said.

“He’s with Jamie,” Dillon said. “He’s safe. He’s been asking for you.”

“He’s scared,” Clara said.

“He is, but he’ll be glad to know that you’re awake and okay,” Dillon said.

He picked up his phone and texted a message to Jamie.

“What happened?” Clara asked.

The doctor, who had just walked in at that moment, said, “You are a lucky young woman. Nothing vital was hit. He hit a couple of veins which we were able to patch up. You lost a lot of blood, but you’re going to be okay. I’m afraid that you will have some scars.”

Doctor Neesom explained that she would be under observation in the ICU for the next twenty-four hours, and then she could go to a regular room. The biggest worry now was infection. She was given morphine for the pain.

“Can I see my son?” she asked.

“For a couple of minutes,” the doctor replied.

“I’ll text Jamie and have her bring him in,” Dillon said.

After the doctor left, she asked, “What happened?”

“John was screaming that I attacked him. They took my statement and talked to Zeke. They picked up the knife as evidence. Your blood was obviously all over the blade. His fingerprints were on the hilt. It was pretty obvious what happened. He was arrested. I imagine that the cops will want to talk to you as soon as they find out that you’re awake.”

Just then, Zeke ran into the room.

“Mama,” he yelled.

“Zeke, are you okay?”

“I’m good. Jamie and Dillon have been taking care of me and Reno. They wouldn’t let me bring Reno into the hospital though.”
