“Kiss me or let me do the kissing.”

I laughed and placed my mouth to his, whispering, “Shut up,” against his lips, then I moved in to kiss him roughly.

His hands wrapped around my waist and pulled me even closer, and I deepened the kiss, rubbing my tongue temptingly against his, moving my hands around his neck, hoping that he felt the way I loved him in that kiss.

When the kiss regrettably ended, I pulled back enough to accuse, “You’ve been fucking with my head.”

“You fucked with mine from the second I saw you. I was straight until I met you, or so I thought.”

“I guess we’re even.”

Chapter Seventeen

“Let’sgetoutofhere for now. Do you want me to let Burke know?”

Remembering Jeffery, I wanted to tell him to do exactly that. “Rick…my ex is in there. With the guy he left me for. As much as I don’t want to neglect this job, I…”

“I understand. I’ll be right back,” he said, but then Joel and Burke came out the door.

Burke rushed to me, grabbing my shoulders. “What happened? Someone said you ran out like you’d seen a ghost.”

“Jeffery. He’s in there. I didn’t mean to run, but…it shocked me, I guess.”

“Your ex?” Burke turned to the door, then back to me, like he was at a loss about what to do.

Joel didn’t have such qualms. “Imma feed ‘im to the hogs. Call Theo, tell ‘im I’mma bringin’ somebody.”

Burke stopped Joel from going back into the club. “Joel, no killing people in the club.”

I loved Joel in that moment more than I loved anyone. Not that I condone violence, but I felt the thought couldn’t hurt. “Thanks, Joel, but I don’t wish death on him.”

“I do! He hurt ya! Nobody hurts my friends!”

Burke pulled him close and kissed his forehead. “Go tell Damon that Kan’s sick and can’t do the shows tonight. He can ask Clover. Clover used to perform at Chaps in Denver, and he’s a porn star. He’ll be a good replacement that won’t have people too pissed.”

“Well, sure, but…iffin I see ‘im…”

“No, Joel,” Burke growled. “Do what you’re told, or I’ll whip you bloody.”

That made him hop to it, and he disappeared into the club. “Thanks, Burke. I just can’t. Besides,” I said, then nodded to Rick.

“Oh, shit! I didn’t even notice. Thank you! One more day of keeping this from him, and I’d have lost my shit. Good on ya both. I’m gonna go chase my boy and keep him from killing your ex. The little fucker almost killed Eli’s ex, so I take him seriously.”

“I forgot about that,” I told Rick when Burke was gone.

“Excuse me?”

“Eli’s ex came to hurt Noah and pin it on Eli. Since then, he’s tried to hire people to kill them both. It’s a mess. Even in prison, the man is a menace.”

“I didn’t know, and here I thought I knew everything that goes on here.” He took my hand and whispered, “Can we get out of here and talk?”

“Where? We could go to the attic, where I stay when I’m here, or there are the really dark woods.”

“Mountain lions around here this time of year. I’ll take the attic.”

We walked hand in hand like a couple of kids. It felt strange, good and like it wasn’t real, all at once. I was giddy inside, roiling with turmoil that the first night I kissed Rick, I had to do it after losing my shit seeing Jeffery.

Not a great one to write in a journal to remember later.
