“Oh…the sand between your toes?”

“Okay, you’re going to make me say it although you know why I’m here. I needed to see you.” His jaw tightened.

“You might not believe this, but I was rushing back to call you because I needed to see you also.”

He chuckled. “Looks like we’re on the same page. At least regarding needing to see one another.”

“Do you want to come inside?” She started to take a step but he reached out and gently wrapped his warm fingers around her wrist.

“Nah. I’d rather stay out here until I settle some things.”

“Really? What things do you need to settle?” Her throat was scratchy.

“I’m not a beach man, obviously, but if this is where you want to call home, I’d be willing to consider it my home too. If you decide to move across the world then I guess I’d have to follow. What I’m trying to say is, we deserve an opportunity to get to know each other. To examine these feelings.” He held his hat against his chest.

She smiled and stepped over to him, taking his hat and dropping it on a nearby chair. “Here’s the thing, I never considered myself a country girl, but I like you. No, I think I love you. The things I love most are your commitment to family, friends, and Ryde Hard. Sunsets and sunrises happen in every spot in the world, and they’re only made brighter with the one who brings a spark to the heart. This is all fast and crazy, but at least we’re crazy together.”

“I can handle that.” He winked.

She took his hand and walked him inside the house. Shadows were moving in. They were alone and she looked forward to being in his arms.

But first…

“I guess I should give you a quick tour. Here’s the living room. The hallway. The bathroom. And this is the guest bedroom where I’m sleeping.” He stepped into the room and she closed the door with her foot before pressing him against the wall, kissing him, the way she’d been craving for weeks.

The kiss was different. It was one created by two people who had finally given into love.

He reached down and picked her up, carrying her over to the bed. When he lowered her to the center, she bent her knees and stared up at him in complete longing and pride—pride that this man, a big-hearted man, was hers.

“I can’t tell you how good it is to have you here,” she said.

“Question, are your mom and dad here?”

“No, they’re away for a while. Days. Maybe weeks.”

He toed off his boots and dropped down beside her, rolling to his back.

When he remained quiet, she lifted on an elbow and looked down at him. He had his eyes closed. “Are you sleeping?”

He didn’t open his eyes but responded with, “Your bed feels amazing. I drove all the way here.”

Eventually her body would get used to the ups and down of desire. By the time they did finally make love she feared she might explode into a million shards of light.

Cuddling closer, she loved how good this felt. She touched his jaw with the tips of her fingers. “You probably need rest.” As far as she was concerned, they had all the time in the world.

He flicked his eyes open. “Rest? Nope. I need to tell you something”

“Okay.” She laughed.

“I’ve spent a lot of years waiting for someone who could make me feel the way you do. I was an idiot not to admit my feelings the time we drove to the mountain. I don’t know why I was being stupid. I mean, honestly, at the time I couldn’t consider moving, not even a bit, but when I woke up the day after you left and I couldn’t see you, knew you weren’t in town, I wanted to kick myself in the ass. What had I allowed to slip through my fingers?”

She reached up and kissed the tip of his nose. “You didn’t allow anything to slip through your fingers. I’m right here. I’m not going anywhere. I guess I will be going somewhere. With you. Back to Second Chance at some point.” She palmed his cheek.

“Can you be happy there?” The sincerity in his tone and expression almost made her cry.

“With you, yes. Since I’ve decided to start my own online marketing company, I can go anywhere and with you is where I want to be. There will be some traveling involved with my business, but I will always come home. Home. Home.” She snickered. “I like saying that.”

He touched her cheek and grinned. “I love you.”
