Will clenches his jaw. “The kids in this school are idiots.”

I grin. “Maybe you should date a cheerleader or something. I bet that would take some of the pressure off me.”

He snorts. “You should ask Blaine to do that, not me.”

I shake my head. “Blaine would never date somebody. I know he likes to flirt or whatever, but trust me, you would break the no dating rule before he would.”

Will cocks his head to the side, looking at me. I wonder what he’s thinking.

Parker squeezes my hand. “I need to get to class. If I let go of your hand, will you be okay?”

I nod. “I’m good. Will can distract me in class. We’ll argue about something, I’m sure.”

Parker grins. “Have fun with that.”

He slowly lets go of my hand. Because I’m prepared for it, it’s not so bad. Will watches me carefully, like he’s scared I’m going to pass out or something.

“I’m good,” I tell Will as Parker leaves, walking toward his class.

The roar is still loud, but knowing Parker is close by helps.

Will puts my backpack over his shoulder. I try to reach for it, but he won’t budge.

“I’m not going to force you to carry your bag. You look pale as it is.” Will eyes me warily.

I raise an eyebrow at him but keep my mouth shut. If he wants to carry my bag, I’m not going to argue.

Just as we’re about to head into class, a boy steps in front of Will and me. Will’s body stiffens and he steps in front of me, nearly blocking my view of the guy. The boy is probably a year or two younger than us, but his eyes are locked on mine. He cocks his head to the side, watching me.

“Whatare you?” the boy asks.

Will nudges me so that I’m standing behind him. “Sheis none of your business. Move along.”

I can’t see the boy any longer, but he does turn and walk away at Will’s command. I glance at Will, wondering what that was about. He doesn’t say a word. He just grabs onto my wrist and tugs me into the classroom.

Of course, why would I expect Will to tell me anything?

We sit in our usual seats at the back of the class.

“What was that about?” I ask him.

He rolls his eyes. “You’re really bad at being a supernatural.”

“Maybe I’m not one,” I say. “Maybe I’m just a human with special abilities.”

He snorts. “Trust me, you’re not human. You’re way too extraordinary to be one ofthem.”

I look at him, waiting for him to say something else, but he doesn’t.

Did Will just call me extraordinary?

“Don’t let it go to your head,” he says. “I still don’t like you.”

Still, I can’t help but grin.

Maybe Will doesn’t hate me as much as he lets on.

As the teacher starts class, he passes me a note.
