Another voice spoke from behind us. “Tell me what?”

“God, the club is like Grand Central tonight,” Michael said, turning toward Jared, who had just walked up.

“It’s crowded tonight for sure, but I saw you arrive and came over to say hi. Are you keeping these two straight?”

“There’s nothing straight about me and Cruz,” I said, butting in. All three of them looked over at me. Cruz laughed but Michael and Jared both gave me a slightly disapproving glance. I mean, yeah, the joke was lame, but it hadn’t been that bad. Had it?

Cruz leaned over and whispered to me. “You shouldn’t interrupt two Doms when they’re talking, Connor. It can be considered rude.”

“What the fuck, they’re not royalty,” I whispered right back. “I’ll say whatever I damn well please.”

I guess I was louder than I thought though, and my so-called whisper really wasn’t one at all, because Jared looked right at me and came over to put a heavy hand on my shoulder and squeezed—hard. “Behave yourself,” he said sternly, and I dropped my head, feeling embarrassed.

“I was about to leave for home, actually,” he told Michael. “Why don’t I take Connor home for you? I actually have a few things I need to talk to him about.”

He took me by the arm, and just like that, I walked out with Jared.

Chapter Ten

I grabbed my hoodie out of Cruz’s locker before we left, because as Jared said earlier, it was fucking freezing outside. Jared pulled me close as we made our way out of the club, with me wearing the hoodie that Jared hated so much, telling myself it would be the last time he’d have to see the damn thing after tomorrow. I’d been meaning to go to the Thrift store and buy something heavier. I snuggled into his side, and he didn’t object, at least. I thought I fit perfectly, as if I was a missing puzzle piece.

Hell, maybe I was. God knows, I had never been able to figure out my life—maybe Jared could help me fit in somewhere. I hadn’t had such strong feelings for anyone in so long I couldn’t even remember when. Now I just had to convince him.

We went over to get in a sleek black sports car I hadn’t seen before. It suited him perfectly in my mind, though. Sleek, fast and dangerous and way out of my league. Just like he was.

We hadn’t gone far when Jared said, “Did you enjoy watching me tonight?”

“Is that a trick question?”

“I noticed you in the crowd watching us. Are you…interested in having a Dom train you?”

I turned my head toward him so fast I almost got whiplash.

“Not me,” he hurried to add. “I don’t have the patience for it anymore. But I could find someone suitable if you’re interested.”

I couldn’t hide my disappointment, so I didn’t try very hard. I slumped in the seat and closed my eyes, feeling exhausted all of a sudden. “I don’t know.”

Jared nodded. “Let me know when you figure it out. No rush.”

He made the turn to go up the ramp toward the interstate in the direction of my apartment. The streetlights cast a pattern of light and shadow on the streets, still wet from a rain shower earlier that evening. The heater was warming up the car and my feet nicely, and I thought it would be nice to stay like this forever, wrapped in this soft leather seat, someone else at the wheel and making the decisions.

“What did you think about the club in general?” Jared asked, jarring the silence.

“It’s kind of intimidating. I’m not sure I fit in. But I’d like to, I think.”

He glanced over at me and then back to the road. “At least you know enough now to make an informed decision. Though I think maybe you should give the littles group a chance before you completely make up your mind.”

“I’m not a little, Jared. I know that much at least. It’s just not for me. I think maybe I’m a middle, like Cruz, but I’m not even sure about that. Some of it really appeals to me, but maybe it’s because I’m weak.”

“It’s not weak to know what you want and go after it. Subs are some of the strongest people I know.”

“Cruz told me how his Dom takes care of him. Watches over his finances and makes rules for him.”

“And you like that idea? I would never have taken you for a rules kind of guy.”

I turned to him, a little surprised. “I am, though. With rules, you know where you are. There’s a structure, and you know what’s expected of you. You’re not just flying blind, hoping you know the right way, and hoping you don’t crash and burn if you can’t figure it out.”

“Are you afraid of crashing and burning?”
