A tall man dressed in navy pants and a long-sleeved shirt is talking with my father. Dark hair cut short, exposing the strong column of his tanned neck. Broad shoulders covered by a fitted button-down and an ass I’d like to bite. This must be Mr. Posada.

They both look tense… somewhat agitated. My heart skips a beat. I hope the construction isn’t having any issues. My father has enough on his plate with the insurance company.

“Hey, Dad!” He turns to face me as I draw closer. “I know you’re busy, but the insurance company guy is here looking for you and…”

My father’s eyes are wide as the other man turns to look at me, and my world quakes.

I know the man. Of course, I do. My head spins as everything around the edges of them turns dark.

Black hair, dark eyes, a smile that makes you melt on the spot, and a body to die for.

I know it because my hands were roaming all over those muscles once.

We spent a night together. He’s… I suck down a gulp of air.

David. My one-night stand. The man who… He’s Davi’s… I can’t even think about it. This impossible. I blink in an attempt to clear the fog clouding my vision.

I’m not ready for this. I’m not.

Two words come from my parched throat: “Oh, shit.”

? ? ?

David looks as shaken as I feel. I can tell. His stunned, confused expression says more than a thousand words.

This man put my world upside down once, and now he’s doing it again.

“Ella?” he finally says.

“That’s her childhood nickname,” my father adds. “David, this is my younger daughter, Melanie. Melanie, this is David Posada. But I have the idea you’ve met before.”

“We did,” David replies, but his scorching dark gaze stills on me, burning me alive.

“What happened to your pants?” Of course, the first thing coming out of my mouth is something stupid. There is a huge green paint splatter pointing straight to his crotch.

“Davi,” my father offers as an explanation. Of course, he did.

My son looks up at me with regret-filled eyes.

“He is…” David says, but it isn’t a question. It’s a statement.

What should I do? Sweat pops on my forehead as I give him a slight nod.

“We need to talk.” His jaw is tight, and it’s not an invitation.

What does he plan to do? To take Davi away from me? I’d tear his eyes out of his face first. It doesn’t matter if he has the money. I have the determination. My son stays with me.

“I’m taking Davi for lunch with your sister. Just let me know if you need me. No matter what, okay?” My father finally shakes the shock away. Yeah, I understand the feeling. I’m still trembling. When he asked me who the father was, I had nothing to say. It was the truth, but now the guy who impregnated me is in front of us. “Come with me, boy. Let’s look for your cousins. We are having lunch at that fried chicken restaurant you like.”

“Bye, Mommy!” Davi yells in happiness and blows me a quick kiss. He runs ahead of my Dad to look for my sister and her girls.

I quickly reply to my father, and my attention is back to David. David Posada, at least I know his name now.

“We need privacy to talk,” he says in a matter-of-fact tone.

“We do,” I admit.

“Is there an office, or…?”
