I watched as she walked inside, wishing I could just follow her.

Maybe others would see my obsession as a weakness, maybe even a curse.

As I strode away, wishing that I could have followed her in, I wasn’t sure.

I only knew that I needed Kennedy like I needed oxygen.

And despite my best attempts…that wasn’t going to change.

“Please! No. Noooooo!”

Sunny snickered as I sliced through the traitor’s fingers, his screams ringing through the air. We’d found out that one of our warehouse guys was trying to find a buyer for the weapons we’d just received. It was bad luck for him that one of the prospective parties who’d contacted him about his weapon supply…had been us. Once Sunny realized that the weapons on sale were ours…we made quick work of capturing Ed Tate.

I was now elbow deep in his blood as I chopped and slashed at his body.

There was an art to torture. And I was definitely an artist.

But I could admit I was not using my usual finesse.

I hated traitors. Hated them with everything in me.

My phone buzzed loudly on the table, interrupting my relentless questioning done between every slash of my knife. Ordinarily I wouldn’t have stopped, but I knew the text was from the guy I’d assigned to tail Kennedy when I couldn't be there.

And she came first. Always.

Cursing under my breath, I ripped off my glove, reached for the phone, and glanced at the message.

Lucas: She’s on a date.

What the fuck? The words hit me like a punch to the gut. Kennedy was not allowed to date. I didn’t think about the men she could have seen…could have fucked…before I found her. It was the only way to keep myself from going insane. Dating now was obviously not an option. Jealousy and anxiety festered inside me, threatening to consume me whole.

Me: Details.

Lucas: Her friend had set up a blind date. They just left the restaurant and they’re now at the movies.

I was going to be a man down after this screwup. Why the fuck hadn’t he sent me a text when they were at dinner?

I took a deep breath.

Address, I typed out, turning my attention towards the macabre scene in front of me.

"Get what we need and then finish him," I barked at Sunny as I stabbed a blade into Ed’s thighs and then strode from the room, ripping off the plastic cover over my clothes as I did so.

I was in my Rolls-Royce Wraith a few minutes later, the engine roaring to life. Every second ticking by felt like a march to a death sentence. I didn’t know why I was so unreasonable when it came to her. She didn’t even remember that I existed. I’d already lost her once though. No one was going to make me lose her again.

Not even her own heart.

I sped through the city streets, disregarding speed limits and red lights, my only focus on reaching the movie theater where Kennedy was on her date.

The minutes felt like hours as I weaved through traffic, my mind racing with a thousand thoughts.

Finally, I pulled up to the movie theater, my heart pounding in my chest like I was having a fucking heart attack. I scanned the area, searching for any sign of trouble out of habit more than anything.

No one was going to mess with me in this town.

I strode towards the entrance casually, not wanting to catch her attention.
