“You should get home to your pregnant wife.” I avoided his eyes. He would not pull me into his ocean. I refused to let that happen.

“I doubt the baby is mine.”

Whoa… pause.

“You were right all along.”

I finally met his gaze.

“I’m so sorry for not believing you. I can’t express how stupid I feel.”

“Wait,” I said in confusion. “What are you talking about?”

“You were right… about the affair. She’s been sleeping with my best friend for two years. I feel like such a fool.”

It seemed like a miracle that he finally accepted the truth.

“How did you find out?”

Noah recapped the whole scenario for me.

“I’m filing for divorce first thing in the morning—and that includes getting a paternity test done.”

“They can do that while a woman’s pregnant?”

“Yes. As long as she’s over eight weeks into her pregnancy—and that’s almost where she’s at right now.”

“What if you’re the father?”

“Then you’ll have a baby brother or sister, and I will love and provide for my child. But I’m still going through with the divorce. My marriage cannot be repaired at this point. So many things have complicated my relationship with Vanessa. Reconciliation is impossible.”

I was afraid to ask my next question, but I did anyway. “Is it because of me?”

“She’s been cheating on me for two years, Aria. I could spend a fortune on marriage counseling, but the truth of the matter is…” He paused, staring into my eyes. “I’m not in love withher anymore. Staying in a loveless marriage not only makes me unhappy, but I’m robbing her of happiness too because I’m not able to love her with all my heart. I can’t even love her with half of it, at this point.”

He doesn’t look heartbroken,I thought. But maybe he’s just hiding his hurt.

Noah was an expert at masking his pain.

“Can I hug you now?” he asked. “I’ve missed you all day.”

“I’ve missed you, too.”

Leaning in, I snaked my arms around his neck and pulled him into a warm embrace. I didn’t want to let go, but all good things always come to an end. Sadly.

“I thought I wouldn’t see you today,” I said.

“You know I can’t stay away from you.”

He got up and closed the blinds before lying down beside me in bed. This was my favorite part of the day: cuddling with Noah. A soothing heat radiated from his body as I molded myself into him.

“What are you thinking about?” I asked.

“You don’t want to know.”

“But I do—otherwise I wouldn’t have asked.”

“True.”
