I throw back my head as a laugh erupts at the idea that a smell could murder someone. That would be a useful tool. Felix takes a deep breath and holds it. Nuzzling the side of his head, I breathe in the scent that is only Felix. He might be a beta, but I care for him as if he were an omega. If Austin was dead set against bringing an omega into the mix, then it would just be the three of us, and I was okay with that. I guess.

“You did good,” I murmur against the shell of his ear. He leans into my side with a sigh as he relaxes. “Austin said you got the girl to rent the apartment.”

“Like it was hard? Two grand? I’m surprised she didn’t run the other way. You know what they say about something being too good to be true? That deal was off the charts too good to be true. I was pretty sure her brother would put a stop to the whole thing, but he caved for her.”

A smile curls my lips at his rambling, and I glance around at the party. God, I hate these things. But here I am, while Austin slipped out to run back to our place to grab something he forgot. My attention snags on the head of the Carmichael mafia. What the fuck is he doing here? The tension that seeps into my shoulders and the way my fingers curl into Felix’s side have my beta looking in the mob boss’s direction.

“Where’s Austin?”

Pivoting away from the man before he catches sight of us, I tuck in next to a large marble pillar. “He ran home.”

“Why are we hiding from Carmichael?”

“Last time I ran into him, he thought I was trying to fuck with his step-sister.”

Felix arches his pierced brow. “Were you?”

“Austin said no omegas, so no I wasn’t.”

“But you would have if–”

I give him a droll stare and drop my arm to my side. “Do I look like I have a death wish? Carmichael has a tight hold on that step-sister of his.”

Felix hums and glances around the pillar. “I don’t know, Saint, I think if you wanted her that wouldn’t stop you.”

I push my tongue into my cheek and nod. “Yeah.”

He was right. If my match came along, Austin would need to pry her or him from my fingers, because I would hold on tight. But if they were my scent match, that would make them his too. That is how it worked with packs. They would even attract Felix.

I lean against the wall at my back and survey the rest of the room. “Tell me about the girl.”

“The pickpocket?” he asks.

Turning my attention back to him, I nod. “Who else would I be asking about?”

He laughs. “Carmichael’s step-sister?”

“You’ll pay for that,” I reply, and he sucks his lip ring between his teeth as he attempts to hide the full-blown grin that pulls at the corners of his mouth.

“Kinda the point, Alpha,” he husks his voice to the low timber that I love.

Adjusting myself in my pants, I straighten my blazer and push off the wall. “Later,” I promise.

Then I tangle our fingers and tug him into the crowd that would lead us away from the Mafia boss. I wasn’t afraid of him but getting his attention would screw up the entire plan. Tonight is about recon, but Austin is right. It would be easier to access things with someone that is good at stealing. And who would be better than an unsuspecting omega?

“I checked out the place our runner followed her to this morning. It was a run-down warehouse, looked like not even the gangs bothered with it. It is a good thing we had Vinny tail her. She was out of there before I even had a chance to return. Pawning Austin’s Rolex like it was on fire.”

“Yeah, paying off that couple helped, too. If we didn’t have an apartment to put her in, we could have lost her to the wind.”

I chuckle. “Can you imagine Austin not only needing to pay to get his watch back, but also losing the girl?”

Felix shivers dramatically. “Heads would have rolled.”

“You love that shit,” I scoff. Well, if there isn’t much blood involved, he does. Squeezing his fingers lightly, we thread toward the entrance. Austin should be back soon, and if he isn’t, there is no way I am staying in my own personal hell.

“Dean St. Cloud,” Melody Lynn says as she steps into our path. I come to a halt before barreling right into the alpha.

“Just Saint,” I reply.
