I laugh. “If I ate that much, I would burst.”

He shrugs. “I ordered all my favorites, sometimes I can’t decide.”

CHAPTER22

Felix

Audrey’slittle moans of pleasure do things to me, things that I’m glad are hidden by the table between us. Still, I encourage her to take another bite of the biscuits and gravy on the tip of my fork. Feeding her is a physical need. Something feels like it is shifting inside of me. I am not sure what it is, but it feels big.

All the changes have roots with the omega across from me.

She takes the bite and falls back against her seat with a groan, holding her stomach.

“Mercy,” she cries. “I’m stuffed. If I eat another thing, you are going to have to roll me out of here like Violet fromWilly Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.”

I snort. “I doubt you are going to blow up like a blueberry.”

Her eyes light up when I catch the reference. “You never know. My life is already a lot likePretty Woman, only I wasn’t a prostitute when you guys found me. What is one more movie?”

“You really like your movie references,” I say.

“I like TV, but yeah, old movies were something I would do with my mom and Sin.” Her smile turns a little sad, some of the sparkle leaving her eyes.

“I didn’t mean to bring up something that drags up sad memories.” I shift in my booth.

I knew what it was like to have memories that brought emotions and regret with them. If only I could have been what my parents wanted. Forcing a smile, I say, “Have you seen the TV that comes down from the ceiling at the apartment? It is huge. We could watch some old movies today.”

She bites down on her lower lip, looking adorable as she holds back a full-blown smile. “That sounds amazing.”

I pull out my wallet and lay down two one-hundred-dollar bills on the table before sliding out of the booth. “See you next time, Margaret!” I call to the waitress.

“Be good, Felix,” she replies with a wave.

I hold my hand out to Audrey, and she barely hesitates before placing her palm on mine. “No promises.”

Audrey laughs, her cheeks pinking again. I sniff her hair as she turns toward the door. She is the first omega that I could smell like this. Even though I am stuffed, she smells good enough to eat.

We walk down the street, the foot traffic picking up with lunch time arriving. Our pace picks up without an audible decision to move faster. And we are almost back at the apartment building when a familiar voice calls out.

“Flea, where are your alphas?” Her silky voice drapes over me like an unwanted blanket, and I shrug as I turn toward Melody. “Sorry, Fe-lix,” she draws out my name, a cat-like smile playing on her lips.

“They are busy.”

Her eyes drop to my hand, still holding Audrey’s, curiosity brightening her gaze. “Who is this?” She shifts her attention to Audrey.

“A friend.” I try to tug her behind me, but she doesn’t budge as she sizes up the alpha.

“You smell divine, dear,” Melody says with a sniff of the air. “But also as if you’ve been rolling around on Austin and Saint’s beds. Are you the omega the papers are raving about?”

I suck in a breath, my fingers tightening on Audrey’s. “I’m pretty sure that isn’t your business.”

She laughs as if I give her endless amusement. The wind changes, blowing the scent of lilacs directly at us. “When will you understand everything is my business? Besides, I don’t need an answer. I can smell the three of you all over her. Dear, if you need rescuing, my name is Melody Lynn. You can find me on the 20th floor of the Empire State Building.”

We are silent as she passes us in a whirlwind. I’m not sure Audrey breathes again until she is gone. “I’ve never smelled an alpha that smells so–floral.”

“It is probably a masking scent. Because I could smell it too.”

Her nose crinkles as she looks at me. “No, that was definitely all her.”
