There is no way it was her, but it isn’t worth even talking about. Melody Lynn is the last person on this planet that I’d want to talk about, well maybe not the last person because the chief of police takes that spot.

TheBreakfast Clubends, the credits rolling. The living room is as dark as night with the shades down and the TV blocking most of the large floor to ceiling windows. I glance over at Audrey, and she wipes a tear from her cheek and grips one of the ten pillows she pulled from her room.

“Do you think John and Claire end up together? They come from such different backgrounds, it almost feels hopeless. You know?”

“They definitely do,” I say. “You want popcorn and we can watch another one?”

“Yes to the popcorn, but…” she pauses. “Can we watchOmega in Paradise? There are two new episodes, and I haven’t watched them yet.”

I stand up, a smile tugging at my lips. “I didn’t peg you as the type to watch that show.”

She shrugs and tugs her blanket higher on her lap. “Guilty pleasure. It is just such an unattainable fantasy, and I’m sure it is all scripted and fake. Or those girls don’t know what they are actually getting into. But for the entertainment factor alone.”

I hold up my hands in the universal sign of surrender, but I can’t help the grin that tugs at my lips. “Not judging.”

“Shut up. Where’s my popcorn?”

I laugh. “Bossy.”

“Austin says bratty,” she quips.

Tossing the popcorn bag in the microwave, I lean against the counter as she twists on the couch to look at me. “They are sort of the same thing. Two sides of the same coin.”

“Well, when you grow up spoiled, I guess that is the byproduct. You know what you want and mostly how to get it.”

“What happened?” I ask before I can stop myself. “I mean, you were living on the streets and stealing to eat before you came here. Again, not judging. I was doing the same when Austin dragged me out of the gutter.”

She swallows and smiles sadly. “People that my dad trusted, they weren’t very trustworthy and they–uh–they–” She wets her lips and blinks rapidly. “They killed them. My parents. And then they came after Sin and me. We survived, but we have to stay low. If they ever find us–” A shiver wracks her tiny body, and she clutches her pillow closer. “We would be dead too.”

The microwave beeps, announcing that the popcorn is done, but I can’t tear my eyes away from Audrey. No wonder she didn’t want her picture taken. She’d been a mess the morning we had brunch, and the paparazzi were outside.

“We will protect you,” I promise. Because even if Austin and Saint don’t, I will. No one will hurt her or her brother ever again. The need to wrap her up and keep her safe builds inside of me like a hurricane, gathering strength the longer it brews.

Ocean breeze envelopes me, blocking out the buttery popcorn. I inhale, sniffing myself. What the fuck? I smell like the fucking ocean. Salty and fresh.

Audrey tilts her head and studies me. “Felix, you’re musking.”

Musking?Only alphas do that. It wasn’t possible. I’m a beta.

I chuckle and reach for the popcorn. Taking down a bowl, I pour the bag into the container. “That isn’t a thing.”

Turning back to the couch, I almost drop the bowl when I find her standing right behind me.

She leans in and sniffs deeply. “It is now.”

When she inhales again, I can’t help but draw in her perfect sweet cocoa scent. It is so strong I want to roll around in it. My body feels as if I’ve stuck my finger in an electric socket after ensuring it was wet. A wildfire courses through my veins, the blood raging like an out-of-control forest fire. My jeans tighten over my growing problem, and I shift on my heels, attempting to put some space between us.

“You smelled amazing before, and now this is. Wow.” She closes her eyes, breathing me in, and every fiber of my beinglovesthe attention. Icravethe attention.

Then I feel it. My breath catches, then becomes ragged. It isn’t like I can whip my dick out right here and see if what I’m feeling is my imagination or not.

“I–” I drop the bowl on the kitchen island and bolt past her before I gather her into my arms and kiss her until she wants me to stop. “I’ll be right back. Get the show started. I’ll join you in a minute.” I shut the bathroom door between us. Looking down at the bulge in my jeans, I hesitate. Tugging my lip ring between my teeth, I pop the button and slide my zipper down. Releasing some of the tension on my dick.

I snake my fingers beneath my briefs and down my shaft, and my heart stops. I’m pretty sure I’ve died. A knot. I have a mother-fucking knot, like I’m some alpha or something. And the musk is rolling off me in waves, the storm building inside me and crashing into my very soul. It isn’t possible. I’m beta. I know I am. Unless–No, that’s rare, almost an urban legend.

Shoving my jeans down to my knees, I push my briefs out of the way, seeing with my own eyes what I felt. My cock is throbbing, a knot forming at the base, pre-cum leaking to the floor in a larger quantity than I’ve ever seen coming from my body.
