He nods.

I rap on the door, calmer now. We need to hash this out. Let her know it wasn’t some diabolical plan to trap her. Just the thought makes me feel sick.

“Audrey,” I say softly. “Open the door. We need to talk.”

No answer.

“Please open the door. I can override the system and use the key, but I don’t want to do that.”

The lock clicks, and if anger had a body, it would be wrapped up in her. Her eyes are like liquid fire when she pins them on me, setting my soul on fire with a single look. “What is the point of a security system to keep me safe if you can override it when you don’t think I should be in here?”

“It was a bluff,” I say, and she tries to slam the door in my face. But I’m faster. My foot jams in the door before she gets it shut. “But we need to talk.”

“Your plan failed.”

“Plan?” I chuckle. “You mean Felix attempting to do something Austin would castrate him for? He was definitely thinking with the wrong head, and I’m not sure him waking up a sigma would deter our fearless leader from the consequences.”

She narrows her eyes at me and crosses her arms, releasing the door in the process. I nudge it open, so I can see her entire face. When she shifts, I smell Felix all over her. He wasn’t lying when he said they almost did something. And she is right in thinking she would be claimed because a new alpha wouldn’t be able to help themselves, even one that was a switch. But how do you tell an angry omega all of that without pissing her off more?

“I thought he was a beta with the rare ability to scent.”

“He was a beta when I left this morning,” I reply.

“I’m standing right here,” Felix says.

She shifts her gaze to him and flushes. Perfume fills the space between us. Yeah, they were into something really deep, if even in her anger she was reacting. She moistens her lips and looks back at me.

“So, if it wasn’t a plan to get me to do what you want, he just turned alpha?” She sounds as disbelieving as I feel.

“It has been known to happen. The sigma trait stays dormant until–” I clamp my mouth shut.

Nope. Not saying that out loud.Until they match. She is all of our scent matches if she is his. If she heard that, she would bolt, gone with the wind. And I’m not losing the only mate I would ever have. Fuck the no omega rule. We are keeping her.

“Until what?” She steps out of her room, and I want to capture her in my arms and hold her to my chest. A purr rumbles from me, and she tilts her head at me. “Dean? Until what?”

“Until they find their mate,” Felix says, finishing my sentence while looking at Audrey like she hung the fucking moon.

She tenses but doesn’t retreat. Then she forces a laugh. I know it is forced because it sounds brittle and breakable.

“That is not possible.” She shakes her head, denying his words.

“Why?” he asks, stepping closer. “I’ve felt a connection to you from the start. Like a puzzle piece clicking into place. A part of my soul returned after a lifetime of loss. I finally felt whole. The world became vibrant, where it used to be gray and dark. You, Audrey, are my light. Another piece of me born into a different body. I know you feel it, too. I bet you feel that with each of us. We complete each other because we really are a pack. You are what was missing all along.”

I’ve felt everything he is saying from the start. He’s just the one to say it out loud and put a voice to it.

“No, I don’t want a pack. Especially one with three alphas. Do you think I’m crazy?”

Her rejection spears straight through my chest, twisting something inside of me as if she shoved a knife in and twisted.

CHAPTER25

Audrey

“That is not possible.”My own words echo in my head like I’m in some sort of alternate reality. A pack? No. I can’t. The need to flee hits me hard. If I could, I would run as fast and as far away as possible.

“Why?” Felix asks. He takes a hesitant step closer, and it takes everything in me not to bolt.

Shaking my head in denial of his words, I hug myself tighter. I can’t rely on anyone but Sin. Only my brother truly has my back. Not these alphas with their pretty lies.
