His arms tighten again, as if he can merge us into one person with sheer strength. I welcome it as I snuggle closer, embracing the dream of living a life like that. Maybe it could be with them. I drift to sleep feeling lighter than I have in years, the soft press of his lips to my forehead the last thing I remember.

CHAPTER35

Austin

The contract is void. All of my work to ensure I brought the painting home where it belongs scattered like leaves in the wind. The omega had broken me. I am still reeling from being between her legs. Hell, I want to do it all over again.

Her pretty mouth calling me daddy and submitting to me. Fuck. It is a dream. There is something about a strong woman handing over their care. The memory of her giving me all of her trust at that moment is a heady drug I can live on. As if I have all the answers and will make all the correct decisions.

And I don’t regret any of it.

My mind keeps creating scenarios where she stays. Where she is really part of our pack. My very soul wants that. And I don’t think I can fight it.

If it wasn’t eight in the morning, I’d pour a drink. Instead, I pull open the refrigerator door and peer inside, ignoring the fact I could just tap the door to see the contents. Even the quiet in the apartment feels full of unfulfilled expectation. Selecting the O.J., I get a glass down and fill it to the top before returning the bottle to the fridge. As I turn back to the living room, I notice Audrey’s door wide open.

I’m not sure if it was like that when I passed it earlier. But she isn’t out here, so I take a few steps toward her room. The bed is rumpled but empty, and the bathroom door is open with the light off. Even her scent is weak in the air, as if she hasn’t been in her room all night.

Has she run? Did she take the first opportunity to leave? A sick churning twists my stomach, turning it over. Of course she would. There is no reason to stay.

A flash of Felix’s bite on her neck runs through my thoughts. The urge to add mine had been strong, but I resisted. Now I wish I had marked her.

I already know that you can't trust omegas. That they take what they want while they fool you with pretty words and promises. Not that Audrey has done either. She never uttered a single promise to stay.

My mood turning, I stalk over to my armchair and sink into the cushions. My gaze fixes on the storm on the other side of the glass. It matches my energy and makes me feel at home.

Felix joins me after a while. He drops to the couch, rubbing his hand over his face and through his hair.

“What’s wrong?” he asks, his voice gravely from sleep.

“Nothing.” My fingers tighten on the untouched O.J. still in my grip.

He hums.

“She ran.”

“What do you mean?” He glances toward her open door. “She is our scent match. She won’t leave.”

I huff out a laugh that is anything but amused. “They all leave, Felix. Omegas only want two things, power and money.”

He chuckles. “Then why would she leave after last night? She’d be on her way to both with very little effort. Not that I think Audrey is like that. She probably has a ton of money that she could have if she wanted and power if she took her rightful spot.”

“In our pack?” I scoff.

“No. At the head of her family.”

I cock an eyebrow.

He shakes his head. “Saint, put it together last night. She is a De Luca twin.”

The world stops. My father had tried to match me with one of the twins to ensure the future of our families. But I’d been inlovewith Sidney, and I refused to even meet the girl. Maybe the future would have been different if I had. But I can’t change the past any more than I can change the fact that she ran.

“None of it matters, because–” I start as Saint’s door swings open, and Audrey slips out. A skimpy tank top and even smaller shorts cover her.

Her cheeks are pink, and she ducks her head behind her hair before disappearing into her room.

“You were saying?” Felix grins over at me, wiggling his eyebrows.

Saint emerges from his room in a pair of sweats, hanging low on his hips. He scratches absently at his chest as he comes into the living area. Her scent is all over him, marking him as hers as clearly as his scent would mark her.
