The cutest smile grew on the little girl’s face. She looked like her mother, and the sight made Kael ache in the most beautiful way.

“I was waiting for when this was going to happen!” she exclaimed, leaping onto the couch and jumping up and down joyfully.

Kael was elated. His family, all of his family, were one force of dynamic love and support.

TWENTY-SEVEN

SARAH

It only took a week of planning before the mating ceremony was ready to go. Initially, Sarah was puzzled by the name, inquiring to Kael as to whether or not they were expected to have sex in front of their friends and family.

He let out a booming laugh that rumbled the floor below them in the kitchen. It was one of those rare laughs that came out of him suddenly. It charmed her endlessly.

“No, no,” he said, going to her and taking her by the hands. “It’s just a formal celebration of your union. I know back on Earth, you call it something different.”

“A wedding,” she said, gazing into his golden aura.

“Yes, a wedding. Something like that. I will be sure to include some of your customs. I have informed the King, and he is more than willing.”

She felt herself blushing, and her stomach coiled with excitable nerves. Never in her life did she think that something so real, so organic, would arrive on the doorstep of her heart. It was a beautiful blessing.

Sarah wished more than anything that her mother could be present for their celebration of love. She had never known her father and only had a handful of friends back on Earth. Kael said they would be transported in time. She longed for some kind of magic that his kind had yet to discover.

Kael had been through the procession before, but with Petal, who remained a mate in another way in his heart. Their relationship was different from the beginning. Petal was not an ex. She had departed from the physical world into the ethereal. Kael’s love for her was infinite, existing on varying planes, while hers was there in the tangible world.

She had never felt even a mere flicker of jealousy. It seemed impractical, though she could relate to someone if they felt that way. She had been adamant about talking about Petal, especially with Suki. There was no way she would replace her as her mother, though she knew she could take on something resembling a mother.

The ceremony was set to take place in the King’s palace, set to be attended by the trustworthy councilmen, their families, the royal family, and the few friends that Kael had invited. The grounds were filled with luxuriously dressed humans and aliens alike, an affluent yet intimate affair.

Sarah was nervous again, standing in the back room where she had put on the ceremonial garb of the Drakonian tradition. It was a long and flowy crimson-red dress with a shapely bodice hugging corset in shiny latex, streamlining past her waist in a waterfall of thin silk. Her bountiful breasts were exposed in a deliciously plunging cliff dive while a finely corded golden necklace with a shimmering fire stone pendant rested against the plump cleavage.

She didn’t have cold feet. She knew how profoundly and deeply in love she was with the Captain. She wasn’t entirely sure, though, how the rest of his kind would take her presence.

The ceremony began in the palace, which looked like a chapel setting akin to the English monarchy. She stood in front of Kael at an altar with the King standing between them, wrapping a flower across their wrists in a long-standing tradition of his people.

Kael’s tracings pulsed as she committed herself to him. Her heart beat in unison.

He committed himself to her with poise and elegance. She was starting to feel far more settled once the ceremony itself had commenced. Guests were escorted into an even larger ballroom.

They sat in their own designated seats next to the King while dinner was served. King Cosmos, who, despite not being related to Kael at all, could have been an older, slightly shorter version of the Captain. He approached Sarah as harps and drums began to sound, and she shot up quickly.

He chuckled and bent forward with one hand behind his back. The other extended out, and she took it while Kael rose next to her.

“No need to be afraid, my dear,” the King said, grinning. “You are one of us now. I have known this one for some time now, and I know how difficult he can be to hold. But you’ve got him now. Be proud.”

Kael was beaming next to her. She could feel it, as palpable as she could feel the music rising in timbre.

“Thank you,” Sarah said, doing a curtsy she had literally just learned that morning.

The King bowed, then went to Kael. Her new mate. He clapped his hand between his own, pulling the Captain in close for a long embrace.

She watched them hug, laugh, and chat. Slowly, her fears began to unravel. She was in good hands, not only with Kael but with a leader and King who trusted them both as a single unit unabashedly. It meant everything to her to be welcomed into their world.

The King gave Kael a kiss on both cheeks, then walked around the palace to greet the guests. It was customary and rather sweet.

When they sat, Kael’s hand went to Sarah’s thigh. It was a sensation that made her shiver, and she never wanted to be rid of it.

“I am only going to ask you this once tonight,” he said, gazing over the frolics of Drakonians who had rushed onto the dance floor. “Are you all right?”
