“Unavoidable, I’m afraid,” Wrath drawled. He was watching Eddie again, and it made her want to fidget. It wasn’t the way Shade looked at her; there didn’t seem to be any sexual intent in Wrath’s eyes. But it was still an uncomfortably intent look.

She jabbed Chris in the chest. “On your knees.”

“You’re making a mistake, Eddie.” Chris dropped his sword with a clang and sank gracefully to his knees. “You’re on the wrong side.”

“Says the man who attacked me.” Eddie scoffed.

“Not you.” Chris jerked his head at Wrath and Shade. “We attacked them. They’re not supposed to be here. Bad shit happens when hell princes gather on this plane.”

There was only one person in the room Eddie could be sure of, and she looked at her grandmother. “Dee?”

“He’s not wrong.” Dee had an arsenal clutched to her chest. “But he’s also not right. There’s something more going on here, and right now, we need to put aside our differences and find out what it is.”

“We have a treaty.” Chris snarled and glared at Dee. “And you are one of our order. You are betraying your order.”

“And that’s my granddaughter,” Dee snapped. “And you bet your ass I’ll betray the order to keep her safe.”

A waft of roses preceded Sophia into the room. Her wings were out, and her hair shone golden in the dim basement. She looked at Chris and then the other guardians lying around. “Oh dear.” She shook her head, her blue eyes troubled. “This is not good. This is definitely not covered by the treaty.”

“Fuck the treaty.” Wrath growled. “My daughter comes first.”

“Oh, fuck.” Dee dropped her armload to the floor with a clatter. “I really wish you hadn’t said that.”

Chris’s gaze grew calculating as it landed on Eddie. “Wrath’s daughter?”

Eddie was following the conversation fine, but she didn’t know why everyone was looking at her.

“That much became fairly obvious when we were in hell.” Shade took a careful step toward her. “Eddie?”

“What?” Eddie kept her crossbow against Chris’s jugular. “Why is everyone staring at me?”

“Tell her.” Wrath glowered at Dee. “Or I will.”

“We had a deal.” Dee glared right back.

“She was not part of the deal,” Wrath said. “I was not even told about her. so regard our deal as null and void.”

Dee nodded. “Fair enough.”

It felt like a swarm of wasps had taken up residence between Eddie’s ears and were interfering with her hearing information and processing it.

“Eddie?” Shade stopped beside her. Sweat shone on the defined planes of his chest. “I was going to tell you when we came back. But this lot were waiting for us.” He jerked his head at Chris.

Eddie shook her head to clear her muddled thoughts. “Tell me what?”

“Uriel.” Wrath sighed and motioned the angel. “Could you immobilize our human friends?”

“I’m not sure.” Sophia chewed her raspberry pouty bottom lip. “The archangels are not going to be happy about this.”

“None of us are happy about this,” Shade said, his eyes tender on Eddie. “But Eddie is my first concern right now.”

“Oh, for fuck’s sake.” A blond man mountain stalked through the basement toward them.

The signature glow of an archangel clung to the bronzed perfection of his bare arms and shoulders. The almost preternatural perfection of his features made Eddie stare. Eyes greener than grass swept the basement and took it all in. “What the fuck have you done now, Wrath?”

“Me.” Wrath’s wings sprang up behind him. He drew back his lips in a growl. “I have protected my get.”

The newcomer stopped and stared at Eddie. He grimaced. “Nephilim.”
