This time, he smiles.

"I miss you so much." My chin trembles as I hold back the waterworks.

"Me too," he rasps. With one last hug, I pull away and turn my back on him.

"Scar?"

"Yeah?" I turn back to him.

"Would you pass along a message to Dad and Mav?"

I smile. "Sure."

He steps forward and whispers in my ear. I sob, and he gently pushes me through the opening.

"I'll see you again when it’s your time.”

And then he's gone.

A loud gasp bursts out of me, forcing me upright.

"Fuck. Scar?" Maverick says in a soft voice. "You're awake? Thank God," he breathes. "I'm going to call the nurse." He runs out of the room, and after a few seconds, a nurse and doctor come rushing in, with Mav following behind.

"It's good to see you awake, Scarlett," the good doctor who looks like Patrick Dempsey without gray hair says while flashing a bright light in my eyes.

"What happened?" I ask in a husky whisper.

He wraps the stethoscope around his neck and tilts his head when he looks at me. "What do you remember?"

I blink a few times and lick my dry lips. "Not much." I feel my wrists tug; when I look down, I notice they are wrapped in white gauze.

No.No, no, no! I wouldn't do this again. I promised myself and my son.

The heart monitor picks up speed, sensing the panic surging through me. My breaths are labored, and I feel an anxiety attack ready to snap.

"Calm down, Tink. Take deep breaths. It's not what you think," Mav says in a quiet, soothing voice.

"Wh-what?"

"You didn't do this." His jaw ticks, and the muscles in his face tense.

Maverick tells me about the events that led to my attack. Grateful I didn't try to take my life, a new panic set in.

“Shaun!”

“He’s okay, Scar. I found him hiding in your secret hiding spot. He's been waiting for you to wake up."

I sigh in relief and let my head fall against the stiff pillow. "Thank God."

The nurse checks my vitals, and the doctor goes over my injuries and tells me he will keep me for a few more days before he's comfortable releasing me. I give him a nod and follow the nurse's exit, leaving just Maverick and me in the room.

"God, Scar. I'm so happy you're okay." Maverick leans over and places a soft kiss on my lips. "You scared the shit out of me," he whispers against my mouth.

"You found me… again." It isn’t a question.

He sadly nods as tears glisten in his eyes.

"God, Ricky, I'm so sorry." I place my hand on his cheek, and he covers it with his own.
