She turned to face him. He’d shut and locked the door and was watching her intently, taking in the sight of her in his space. He liked having her there.

He moved toward her slowly, taking her face in his hands.

“I’m sorry about how I left this morning,” he said, his lips just a whisper away from hers.

“It’s okay,” Sam said, holding onto him. “You didn’t have to do all of this.”

“I wanted to,” Aero admitted, kissing her softly. He did. He wanted Sam to feel special and cared for—by him and only him. Kai could fuck off. Not that he truly believed Kai was interested in Sam, and Aero was strangely thankful she came to the clubhouse and let Kai serve her drinks instead of going out to a random bar full of strangers. But still, Sam was his.

“Wine?” He offered, and she accepted. After taking the glass of whiskey from her hand and setting it on his desk, Aero sat on the edge of the bed and poured the wine. She sat beside him, running her hand over the black sheets. They were smooth and cool beneath her fingers, and she wanted Aero to press her into them and explore her body. Shaking off the thought and reminding herself to be patient, she accepted the wine and settled beside Aero on the pillows.

He kicked off his boots and sat back, crossing his legs and sipping his wine.

They drank in silence for a few moments until he couldn’t take it anymore, setting his glass aside and taking her hand in his.

“Are you okay?” Sam asked, looking up at him.

Aero nodded. “Is Molly always like that?”

Sam sighed. “Pretty much. I’m sorry she said those things to you. None of them are true, but she likes to think she knows everything about everyone because she’s studying psychology. I’m sort of hoping it’ll pass.”

Aero found himself chuckling. “That’s okay. It wasn’t that big of a deal. She just caught me off guard.”

“Well, I sort of let her have it once you left,” Sam admitted.

Aero arched a brow. “You yelled at her?”

Sam bit her lip and nodded slowly.

He laughed out loud; the sound was so bright and full of amusement that it startled her. She grinned up at him, already addicted to the noise.

“I’m so proud of you,” Aero said when he stopped laughing, wrapping an arm around her shoulders and tucking her into his side. “You should speak up more.”

Sam sighed, resting her head on his shoulder. “I know. Sometimes I wish I was more assertive. That’s something I’ve always admired about Gemma. She doesn’t take anyone’s crap.”

“True,” Aero said. “My sisters are like that. My mom, too. They’re all strong women. I love that about them. It makes it easier to stay away because I know they can take care of themselves.”

An air of sadness cloaked them both suddenly. They sat in silence for several minutes, sipping their wine, until Sam spoke.

“I’m going to New Mexico next week. I’ll be gone for a few days.”

“I know.” Aero sighed, leaning down and nuzzling her neck. “I’ll miss you.”

Sam’s heart swelled. “I’ll miss you, too.”

“I’m glad you’re going to see your brother,” Aero said, stroking his fingers up and down her arm.

“Me too. It’s been a long time,” she said, hesitating before asking, “When was the last time you saw your sisters?”

Aero swallowed hard. “Four years ago.”

“Oh,” Sam whispered, snuggling closer.

“They don’t understand.”

Sam frowned. “Don’t understand what?”

“Me. The way I am. They sort of expect me to be the same as I’ve always been, but… I’m not, and that makes it hard to deal with me.”
