The heavy door of the Chapel bangs shut, making me flinch.

“Home, sweet home,” Theo says with a playful tone. But it’s lost on me.

“I can’t stay here,” I say.

“What?” He frowns. “Of course, you can. I’m going to take care of you.”

“Theo—”

“No, sunshine. I need to do this. Let me do this, okay?”

“I… okay.”

Relief washes over his expression. “Come on, let’s get you up to my room.”

Weary, I follow him upstairs and into his bedroom. He falters for a second, and I wonder if he’s remembering my betrayal. The money I stole. The fact that the last time I was here, was the last time things were okay between us.

“Do you want to sleep?”

“I’m not sure I can.”

Every time I close my eyes, I see Vaughn’s face.

“We can watch a film. Or one of those trashy TV series Millie thinks I don’t know she watches.”

“Whatever,” I murmur.

Theo pulls back the bed covers and offers me one of his Saints t-shirts. “Need some help getting changed?” he asks.

“I think I’ve got it.” I snatch the t-shirt from his hands. He gives me a sharp nod, but I know he’s confused. I can sense it.

Making quick work of changing, I climb into his bed and pull the covers over me.

“I’m going to get you a glass of water and sort out your painkillers.”

“Thanks,” I whisper, barely acknowledging him.

“Raine, I…” He stops himself and relief flows through me.

I don’t want to have the hard conversations yet.

Maybe ever.

Something inside cracked when I saw that truck barrelling toward us. When I accepted that I was going to die.

Only, I didn’t.

And now I’m here and Theo thinks everything will just go back to how it was before.

But how can it?

He knows the truth now.

They all do.

And it won’t be long before the whole town knows about my dark, sordid past.

I’m not ready to deal with that.
