Her head tilted while the softest expression moved across her face. “I told you I’ve been in your shoes, so I wouldn’t do that to anyone, especially not someone who’s about to be part of my family.” Her hand moved down my arm and gripped my fingers. “Macon and I are very close—the whole family is. You’re going to be seeing a whole lot of me, and that’s no way to start a friendship.”

The first time I’d met her, I had been overwhelmed by the respect I felt for her.

I didn’t think it was possible, but that feeling doubled.

Since I wasn’t sure my words could even dent the way I felt, I wrapped my arms around her again and hugged her. “Just know that I’m so grateful for you.” My voice was only a little above a whisper.

When I pulled away, she said, “You have no idea how relieved I am for you now that you don’t have that conversation weighing you down.”

“Honestly, it’s the best feeling.”

She laughed. “Trust me, I get that in every way.”

Besides the way I felt, I was thankful Macon had forgiven me, that he wasn’t constantly reminding me of the lie and holding it against me. That it hadn’t become a daily thorn in our relationship.

That didn’t mean he’d forgotten. I was sure the thought still crossed his mind often, but the important part was that we were able to move on and he wasn’t dwelling on the past.

And now, I could focus on proving to him that I would never lie again.

“I don’t want us to be late, so I’m going to put the dress on in the bathroom.” I draped it across my arm. “Be right back.”

She took a seat on the bed. “I can’t wait to see it on you. That shade is going to pop on your skin.”

“I’d say it is.” I laughed. “I only ever wear black, but red is Macon’s favorite color on me.”

She lifted the bottom of the dress and held it near my face. “Oh, yes, I can definitely see why. Red is absolutely your color.” She adjusted her position. “I’ll be right here, waiting for you.”

I hurried into the bathroom and took off the robe, hanging it on a towel hook. Since I already had on a strapless bra that I’d planned to wear with the other outfit, along with a thong, all I had to do was unzip the dress and step into it, lifting it up my body and positioning it across my chest. While I held it in place, I fixed the pieces of hair I’d curled earlier and checked my makeup. I normally didn’t wear eye shadow or eyeliner or even such a thick coat of mascara. But with tonight being so fancy, I’d added all three, and I made sure none of it had smudged.

Pleased with the final look, I rejoined Jo in the bedroom.

Her eyes instantly widened, dipping down the whole length of me to take me in. “Holy shit. You look so freaking hot, mygaaawd.” She moved behind me to zip me up. “This was literally made for you.”

When she finished, I turned toward her, my stomach tightening from the sexiness of this tiny dress. “It’s not too much?”

“Too much? Heck no! Macon is going to die when he sees you.” She looked at my bare feet. “What shoes are you wearing with it?”

I’d only brought one pair, and that was a strappy wedge that I’d thought would look great with the other dress, but now that I was in this one, I wasn’t so sure.

I returned to the closet to grab the shoes from where I’d placed them on the floor, and that was when I saw the box, positioned directly next to the wedges, with another note taped to the top.

I couldn’t get you a dress without the perfect pair of heels to go with it.

I can’t wait to see your legs in these.

And I can’t wait to see you later tonight wearing only these.

“He thinks of everything,” I said as I turned toward the doorway where Jo was standing.

“Christian Louboutins.” Jo nodded toward the box, where the designer’s name was on the top. “Macon has excellent taste.”

“I have a feeling these are ungodly expensive—and if they are, don’t tell me. If I know how much they cost, I’ll make him return them.”

“Let him spoil you. He can afford it.” She winked.

I took a seat on the bed and opened the box. The black heels were at least four inches tall and the most beautiful I’d ever seen. A strap went across the base of my toes with a satin ribbon that tied around my ankle, the bottoms the same color as the dress. Once I had them on, I stood on the carpet, balancing on the thin stilettos.

Jo groaned, “Your feet are going to be screaming within an hour. Somehow, just deal with the pain because those shoes with that dress are everything.” She took a few steps back to get a better view. “Poor Macon. He has no idea what he’s in for tonight. The sight of you is going to torture him.”
