“What about?—”

Striding over to Kristie, I sweep her up from the ground and hold her against me.

She instantly starts fighting me. Kicking and throwing her arms around in an attempt to make me release her.

She can try as hard as she likes; it’s not going to happen.

“I’m going to put her somewhere she can’t hurt herself. Do you trust me?” I ask, walking up to Alana, who’s watching us with wide, terrified eyes.

It takes a second, but they eventually settle on mine, and the moment they do, I know her answer. I can read it in her blue depths, in the way her body sags slightly.

“Yes. I trust you.”

Her words, the truth behind them, make my breath catch. And I lose my focus for just long enough for Kristie to swipe me across the face.

“Fuck,” I seethe. “I feel less guilty about what I’m about to do now. J, lead the way.”

Knowing exactly what I’m thinking, he rushes ahead of me and down the stairs.

“Wait,” Alana calls, having followed us out to the hallway. “Are you… are you taking her to the basement?”

“Alana,” I start, expecting her to argue.

“It’s okay. I meant what I said. It’s for her own good, right?”

“Everything I do now is for you, Pet. Never forget that.”

And with those words hanging in the air, I descend the stairs and then follow JD down to the basement.

Kristie fights me the whole way. All I can hope is that she wears herself out and sleeps for the next few hours. She’s going to be even more miserable otherwise.

ALANA

The thought of what Kristie is going through right now makes my stomach knot painfully as I sit in the back of Reid’s truck, safely between JD and Mav.

Both of their hands grip mine in silent support as we race across Harrow Creek toward the building that Brody told us he’d seen Dad in.

My heart races with anticipation.

I want to believe that this is it. That the arrogant motherfucker has locked Sheila and Daisy away in one of the busiest buildings in the town in the hope of hiding in plain sight.

Honestly, it’s the sort of shit he would do.

He’s always been about the show and letting anyone who cares to look know how powerful and sick he is.

It’s why he willingly stood there as so many of his friends abused me.

He wanted to show me off. Brag to everyone about what his daughter could do.

My stomach turns over as I remember his burning stare as man after man abused my body.

He didn’t give a shit then, and he doesn’t give a shit now.

“We’re going to get them,” Mav assures me quietly.

I nod, hoping like hell that he’s right.
