I strain, listening for more, praying that it was just the normal movement of the house, but as much as I try to convince myself of that, something doesn’t feel right.

“Oh my God,” I whisper. I trusted when they locked me in here, trusted that we’d be safe.

I should have at least grabbed a gun, my knife… anything.

I look around Daisy’s room for a weapon but come up short.

And that’s when I hear it again.

But this time, the noise is easily identified.

The stairs.

I look from Daisy to the door, and back again, trying to figure out how best to protect her.

But it’s too late, by the time I look back again, there is a shadow approaching the hallway.

I rush to Daisy’s side, ready to throw myself in front of her if necessary. She’s already been through more than any little girl should; she is not going through anything else, I’ll make sure of it.

There’s another creak as the person approaches the door, and the second they make their presence known, all the air comes rushing from my lungs.

REID

No words are said as I drive toward the location for tonight’s showdown.

My grip on the wheel is tight and my entire body is wound up like a coiled spring.

I should be focusing on what’s to come, on the plan that I’ve been working on over the past few days since I got the intel about Victor’s location.

I should be worrying about the loyalty of those who’ve said they’ve taken my side, who’ve agreed to stand by me as leader of the Hawks, to help rid my father from the face of the Earth.

But I’m not.

All I can think about is her.

Alana Murray.

She was dragged into my life kicking and screaming only a few weeks ago, and just look at what’s happened.

She’s given me even more inspiration to do this, and I don’t think she’s aware of it, but she’s given me even more strength to fight.

Before her, things were moving in the right direction. I’d put a lot of work into setting this whole takeover plan into motion, but I felt like I was on a continuously spinning hamster wheel that had no end.

She helped me see the end. She got us here.

Glancing to the right, I find JD sitting with his fists clenched on his lap, also lost in thought. I can’t help but wonder if the object of our musings is the same woman.

Sure, JD and I have shared a lot of things over the years, but I never expected that we’d end up sharing the same woman. Not for more than a night, anyway.

But the way she lights him up inside and banishes those dark shadows that terrify me so much is a sight to behold. One smile from her and it’s like a switch has been flicked in my best friend. I’ve never seen him happier than when he has her in his arms, and fuck, I never want that to change.

My eyes lift to the rearview mirror, taking in the man sitting behind me.

A man I never, ever expected to be a part of my life, let alone be able to call my friend.

I shake my head, trying to come to grips with how all of this has happened so fast.
