Sensing my attention, he looks up.

His eyes are dark and hard, mirroring exactly how I’m feeling as we move close to the end of this.

He nods once, letting me know that he’s here and he’s ready.

I’m not sure I’ll ever be able to express how much his support means, or how much I appreciate everything he’s ever done for Alana.

I know he has his moments where he second-guesses his decisions regarding her, but I think one thing is very obvious. If he’d done just one single thing differently, then we might not be here right now. And I for one can’t imagine my life being any different from what we have found.

Yes, it was unexpected, but it’s everything.

My cell lights up on the dash, dragging me back to reality, and when I read it, I find confirmation from Devin that everything is ready.

They’re just waiting on us.

We should have left ten minutes before we did, but as excited as we are to put all of this to an end, I don’t think any of us really wanted to walk out of the house.

Alana staying at home with Daisy was the right thing to do. I’m so fucking relieved she came to that decision herself, without us having to intervene. Obviously, if she really wanted to be here tonight, then I wouldn’t have stopped her. I learned my lesson the hard way with trying to force her into doing what I thought was best. But if she were here right now, none of us would be focusing on what’s important. We’d all be too busy worrying about her, which would be pointless because she’s more than proved that she can handle herself, but that wouldn’t stop us from worrying, from trying to protect her. That will always be our number one job now. Both she and Daisy are at the very top of our priority list, and it’s exactly the way it should be.

I take a turn and the car begins bouncing as I pull into the undercover spot.

“Christ,” JD grunts when I hit a deep pothole, making us all lift from the seats. “I know you’re impatient, but we need the car in one piece to get home.”

Ignoring him, I pull to a stop under the thick tree cover and kill the engine, plunging us into darkness.

No one says anything; no one moves. Hell, I’m not even sure if anyone breathes.

The calm before the storm.

A moment to appreciate the reason for doing what we do.

Sure, many might claim that we’re sick bastards just like our fathers. That we’re nothing more than the product of our upbringings. And yes, to a point, they would be right. But there is so much more to all of us than that.

I take a final fortifying breath before my lips part. “JD, get the comms,” I demand, forcing us all into action.

In only seconds, we have our earpieces in place and we’re armed and ready to move out.

“Kill every motherfucker who shows allegiance to that cunt, but Victor Harris… he’s mine,” I warn, throwing the door open and stepping out into the night.

“You got it, Boss,” Mav agrees.

“The sooner this is over, the sooner we can embark on tomorrow.”

“You mean the sooner we can roll around in your bed with our woman?” JD teases.

I’m about to respond when a voice crackles through the line.

“Will you hurry the fuck up?” Devin hisses. “Some of us don’t have all night.”

“Bro, trust me, the girl who’s waiting on you can certainly wait. To be honest, she’d probably be better partying solo,” Ezra responds.

“So…” JD taunts. “Business as usual then?”

I reach out the second he steps up to me and squeeze his shoulder.

“Appreciate this, man.”

“Dude, you know I wouldn’t be anywhere else in the world right now.” It might be dark, but I know he’s smirking at me. “Well, other than inside Alana’s tight— ow,” he complains when Mav hits him.
