“What?”

“A gun. Do you have one?”

“Yeah, of course. Why?”

“Shoot me,” I say, standing before her with my shoulders squared, determination in my muscles.

“Excuse me.”

“You heard me. Shoot me. You’ve already allowed that to happen. So take me out too.”

Her brow furrows. “I’ve already…” She shakes her head. “You’re fucking crazy.”

“I’m nothing, Aubrey. Nothing.”

“No, that’s not?—”

“I’m not letting you do this. You’re not taking me back there.”

“I have to. I have orders.”

A bitter laugh spills from my lips.

“And no one says no to the mighty fucking Harris. Fuck, FUUUUCK,” I bellow, losing the fight and strength I found a moment ago.

Falling back to my knees, I stare at the house, or what’s left of it.

I might still be living and breathing right now, but I may as well not be.

Without them, I am nothing. I have nothing.

I am no one.

I’ve no idea how long I sit there staring as flames destroy my life and every single one of my hopes and dreams literally goes up in smoke. It could be seconds, or it could be hours.

Nothing feels real.

Nothing.

“It’s not what you think,” Aubrey says, coming to sit next to me.

“Why are we still sitting here? If you’re under orders to take me back to them, why are you forcing me to stay here and watch this? Or is it all part of the plan? They want me broken beyond repair, so I no longer have any kind of fight. Is that it?”

“Is that… wait… You thinkIdid this?”

“You got me out of the house,” I say emotionlessly despite the raging inferno inside me. “You knew that was going to happen, and you rescued me. You did this. You did this for them.”

“No, you’ve got this all wrong. Yes, I got you out to keep you safe, but only because?—”

With speed that I didn’t think I was capable of on the best days, let alone when I’m dying inside, I reach out and pull the gun from the back of her pants.

“What the fuck are you doing?” She gasps when I jump to my feet and hold it up, pointing it right at her head as she climbs to her feet.

She doesn’t do anything other than stare at me.

Honestly, I’m pretty sure she could have this out of my hands and turned on me in less than a second, but she doesn’t even try.

“You killed them. You left them in that house to die. You’re meant to be his friend. He trusts you, Aubrey. Do you have any idea how rare that is?”
