It was at this point I realized exactly what I was doing.

Arguing about the sex of a baby I would never have.

A baby that would never exist.

Why was I doing this?

I shut my eyes and took a few deep breaths.

None of this mattered.

Carlo could ask me for goats if he wanted.

I wouldn’t be around to give those to him, either.

All my arguing accomplished was stalling a resolution.

And our bedtime.

“Okay, fine. Carlo gets a son and then I have Stefan’s baby.” I looked at Stefan and asked, “Do you require triplets for your family line? Because I’m not sure I can manage that.”

His eyes softened finally and a little of the kind, loving Stefan I knew emerged. “One baby at a time works for me, sweetheart.”

Eve spoke up, “Oh, my gosh. This is the best discussion we’ve ever had.” Her glassy, loving eyes landed on me. “Dani will have a sibling and all our babies will grow up together.”

I started to get emotional, too.

Over imaginary, never-existing babies.

“I’m taking her to the gala tomorrow,” Stefan announced as he stared at his brother.

Carlo’s head swung around. “Like fuck you are,” he answered back.

“Oh, good grief,” I muttered and settled in closer to Nick. I loved his warm, spicy scent. It always comforted me and made me feel protected for some reason.

“Why the hell not? You get to put your baby inside of her first. And I can’t take her as my date tomorrow night?” Stefan raised his voice.

“No, you can’t,” Carlo stated in no uncertain terms.

“Why not?”

Carlo swallowed and said, “Because I told Mom I was going to marry Giselle.”

There was a long silence.

And then Stefan exploded. “For fuck’s sake, Carlo! What were you thinking?” Stefan spat out at his brother. He stood and stepped in front of Carlo.

Carlo rose to his feet. I swear his body grew in size—I swear. When he looked down at Stefan—even I shuddered. “I was thinking,” he bent down slightly, “that I was going to marry Giselle. That’s what I was thinking.”

Stefan’s eyes flared, and his hands formed into fists. “Then you’ll just have to tell her that your plans have changed.”

Oh, boy.

If I wasn’t mistaken, someone here was going to lose their head. And a fight over me wasn’t worth it. Especially since I was leaving both of them soon, all of this was for nothing.

Luckily, Nick let me go. So, I hurried over and stepped in between them. “Would you two stop it? This is stupid.”

Stefan frowned at me and set his hands on his hips. “How is this stupid? Do you want to marry Carlo instead of me?”
