I pushed a hand into each of their chests before I looked right at Stefan. “Nobody’s marrying anyone. Would you settle down? This is for some dumb party?” I poked both of their chests with my index fingers. “Which neither of you told me about, I have to remind you. But anyway, it’s for one night? A few hours. Who cares what they all think? We know the truth.”

Stefan’s face seemed to lose its sharpness. But he was far from ready to give in.

And I really, really needed him to give in so we could quit this nonsense. I wasn't marrying anyone. That part was true.

Because I was already married.

Stefan’s hand slapped against his chest. “I fucking care, Giselle. It’s good to know you don’t.”

Oh.

Boy.

I dropped my hand from Carlo’s chest and turned to Stefan. “You’re misunderstanding me. What I’m saying is that we know the truth. It doesn’t matter to me what other people think. And no, Carlo shouldn’t have said what he did—” I took a deep breath, “but he did. And so we’ll deal with it. I’ll go as his date.”

He opened his mouth to speak, but I covered it with my hand. “It’s just one stupid party. It means nothing.”

Stefan spoke under my hand, “It means something to me.”

I gave him a genuine smile and my honest answer. “Well, it doesn’t mean anything to me.”

His eyes stared into mine, and it felt safe to remove my hand from his mouth. So, I did. “Now, can we all go to sleep? The kids are going to be up before we know it.”

Nick groaned and stood, “Good idea, Giselle. I’m exhausted.” He held his hand out to Eve and said, “Wife, let’s go.”

But instead of listening to her husband, Eve jumped off the couch and gave me a big hug. “Are you okay, sweetie? Do you need to talk? Just the two of us?”

I squeezed her right back. “No, I need sleep. But thank you, my friend.” I moved my head back and—kissed her on the mouth.

She kissed me back and smiled. “Have a good sleep. I’m here if you need me.”

We let each other go, and she shuffled over to Nick. He put his arm around her, and they walked out of the living room together.

I followed behind them.

Carlo and Stefan didn’t say anything, but I could hear them behind me.

It felt like we had to walk a mile back to our room. Once inside, I ran to the bed and grabbed their pillows. I strode up to Carlo and handed him his pillow. Then I turned and gave Stefan his.

“What the fuck’s this?” Stefan asked as he frowned at me.

“It’s a pillow, Stefan.” I leaned toward him. “You’re going to need it wherever you’re sleeping tonight.”

His eyes narrowed on me. “I’m sleeping here. With you.”

My eyebrows nearly flew off my face. “Oh, no you’re not.”

“And why not?” he asked, his voice sounding more than pissed off.

“Why not? Why not?” My voice rose higher. “Maybe because you started all of this tonight. And you are not allowed to come inside of me again for at least a week.”

The look on his face would have been funny if I wasn’t so mad at him. Then I stepped up to Carlo and slugged his pillow into his stomach. “And here’s your pillow.”

Carlo grabbed his pillow. “What the hell did I do?”

“You? Mr. I-need-an-heir-to-my-throne? I guess we can discuss this more at the gala,” I pointed my finger at him, “that you didn’t tell me about.”

I didn’t wait for him to respond. Instead, I spun around on my heel and stormed back to the bed. This time I jumped inside and covered up—looking forward to some uninterrupted sleep.
