Knight

Iwatch her sleep curled into herself after crying for at least an hour. I got the boys fed and off to bed, telling them their mom wasn’t feeling well. They bought it and went on about their business as usual.

I stand from the edge of the bed and walk out to the living room before dropping onto the couch and checking some messages. I need to see if the guys had any luck. If they found anything, but so far, there’s nothing.

“She isn’t sick, is she?” I look up when I hear Cameron speak.

“She is. She wasn’t feelin’ well. You should be in bed,” I tell him, checking the time to see that it’s already one in the morning.

“Did he find us?”

“I don’t think so.”

“You don’t think so? What does that mean?”

“That means somethin’ happened tonight that I’m not gonna talk about, but I don’t think it was him,” I tell him. There’s no way in hell I’m going to tell this kid we got shot at. That’s all kinds of fucked up on my part.

“But she’s okay?” he asks as I nod my head.

“She’s okay. She’s gonna be fine, Cam. She just needs some rest,” I tell him.

“And you’re staying here tonight?” I can hear the hitch in his voice. I know that’s what he wants, and there’s no way in hell I’d leave them tonight anyway.

“Yeah, kid. I’m gonna be here all night. Go back to bed.” Cam finally nods his head and turns to walk back down the hall. I blow out a breath and lean back on the couch, wondering just how badly scarred these kids are. How much did he actually put them through?

After a few minutes of talking to myself, I shove up and step out the front door to have a smoke. That’s when my phone rings. I pull it out and answer.

“Yeah?”

“We don’t have shit. Dark car with three occupants. That’s it. From what we can see, you were right. They were aimin’ at you,” Cage informs me. I blow smoke into the air and glance up and down the street once more. I’ve checked the street more times tonight than I care to admit, but I need them to be safe.

“This is fucked up. We got shit to go on,” I tell him.

“Not a goddamn thing, brother. Don’t know if that was directed at you or her,” he says, sending a chill down my spine. I’d kill him if it were him coming after her. I will kill anyone who shoots in her general direction, regardless of who they are.

“This is fucked up, Cage.”

“Sure as hell is. Wish we had more to go on,” he says.

“Me too, brother. If it’s him, that means they’re not safe here.”

“He may not know where they live just yet. Maybe he’s just tryin’ to scare her. Hell, it could be Blood Hounds MC. We don’t know, Knight.” And that’s the problem for me. We don’t know. I need to know. I need to know who and what I’m up against.

“This is all so fucked up,” I tell him once more.

“Heard that. We got your back. You know that, right? Whether it was MC or him.”

“Appreciate that, Prez.”

“We’re brothers, Knight. It’s what we do for family.”

“Let me know if you hear anything else,” I tell him before hanging up. I shove my phone back in my pocket and finish my cigarette before stepping back inside. I punch the numbers into the alarm system to set it up for the rest of the night and head down the hall. I peek in at the boys to make sure they’re all good, finding both of them asleep.

I walk down to Lyra’s room and step inside, pulling my cut down my arms and setting it on the dresser. I strip out of the rest of my clothes before climbing into bed next to Lyra. I scoot as close as I can, pulling her into my arms when she sighs.

“Thank you for staying.”
