“There is someone here to see you.”

I narrow my eyes at her. “Who?”

“Lex,” she whispers. “Give him a chance to explain.”

Now he wants to explain?

As if reading my mind, Kate looks at me and says, “Hey, be grateful it’s not two years.” I grimace.

Small miracles…

“Go,” she nudges me toward the steps, and my feet carry me down to him without permission from my brain. Today they want to take orders from my heart.

Just before I reach the bottom, I glance at myself and wince. I looked like crap and didn’t even take that shower I wanted to.

Oh well…

This is me. The me that looks like crap in three-day-old sweats, a baggy t-shirt, and greasy hair. The whole real, uncensored me.

I reach the bottom, and my heart sinks right away.

Technically, I didn’t catch a single glimpse of him yesterday when I ran away from his wife’s room. How is it possible that he looks even better now? How could he change in that one week? When I saw him last, he was hopelessly wasted and trashed, but now he is my same old handsome Landon. All put together in his black Armani suit and a crisp white shirt. His dark hair was shiny and combed to perfection. His scent makes me dizzy and high.

The high I missed dearly.

However, the worst part is his eyes. Those grey pools look at me like I am his most precious gift, but there is also pain in them. So much pain.

I want to take the pain away from him. This shameless demon hurt me and broke my heart, yet I want to take away his suffering and kiss each wound well.

I need help. Major help.

“Lexi,” he says almost breathlessly as if I am standing in front of him in a sexy black cocktail dress versus my girl-that-got-dumped setup.

“Landon.” Somehow that sounds almost normal.

Get it together, woman. Stay strong. Don’t break down in front of him.

“Can I come up? I need to talk to you.”

“Sure,” I say and turn around, heading back up with Landon hot on my heels.

I see him nod hello to Kate in the kitchen before we slip inside my room.

Crap, the room looks even “better” than I do.

My bed is a mess, broken pieces of frames and plates are still lying around since I didn’t let Kate clean it up, and it’s stuffy with my tears.

I rush to open the window and let some cool air in. Please, don’t look around too much. I think to myself and chance a look at Landon. But he’s not looking at the room. His eyes are set on me and me alone.

That gaze sets my insides on fire. I know that look. It’s a hungry one.

No, Lexi! We are staying strong! Remember?

I shift my eyes off him, take a deep breath, and say, “About yester—”

My words seem to break some sort of spell he was in, and he breaks me mid-word. “There is a story I want to tell you.”

“A story?” I ask, taken aback and biting on the inside of my cheek. What does he mean by a story? I wanted an explanation, not more lies.
