LANDON

Song: Vanotek – Love is Gone

“Hey man, are you heading out?” I ask my best friend and business partner, Dominic.

We have been friends for over fifteen years, since my freshman year of high school. He’s been my college roommate and the best man on my wedding day, my ride-or-die. When I decided to start my own online magazine page, there wasn’t a doubt in my mind about who I was going to do it with.

Dom and I worked like a Swiss clock together. He was brilliant with all the behind-the-scenes side, and I was the creative brainpower with the financial cushion for us to start.

“Hey, yeah, gotta run a few errands. Are you going to be okay to close up without me?”

Actually, I wanted to leave early myself since I had plans for the evening, but clearly, Dominic forgot what kind of day it was today, and I didn’t want to be an ass to ruin his plans. So, I guess I’ll stay and close up.

“Please, don’t lie to your best friend, errands my ass, you are running off to that woman of yours, aren’t you?”

Dom is an attractive, athletic man with Italian roots who was never short of female attention, but he has been seeing someone seriously for about a year—or so I think—and refuses to introduce her to us. Jennifer and I tease him mercilessly about it, but he won’t crack.

There is a slight smile on his face when I mention her, but it is chased away by some other emotion I can’t quite understand.

“I’m right, huh?” I smirk at him.

“Yeah, yeah, you caught me,” he tosses back. “So? You’ll be okay?”

“Yeah, it’s fine. Go have fun, but I’m telling you, if I don’t get to meet this special someone soon, I will stalk you and see her for myself.” A wicked glint passes his eyes, but he erases that look almost immediately, dismissing my comment, and heads out of my office.

What was that about?

I stay back another two hours and head out.

“Hi, can you wrap fifty red roses for me, please,” I ask the florist at our neighborhood shop. She knows me well; I come in here at least once a week to buy a little something for my Jenn.

The florist smiles at me. “You got yourself one lucky lady.”

I return the smile with ease because, hell, yes, I did. I have a beautiful wife waiting for me at home, and today is our seven-year anniversary, so I decided to get a more special bouquet for her.

Jennifer and I met in college. She is a year younger than me. As soon as I saw her in my creative writing class, I knew she was the one. Tall brunette with olive skin and chocolate eyes. My attraction to her was instant and still burns hot seven years later, even though our marriage has been friendly at best lately.

I also have a gorgeous diamond necklace I need to pick up from the jeweler for her and prepare a romantic dinner for just the two of us. I love pampering her with attention and gifts.

That’s why I wanted to leave early but whatever. There is still plenty of time.

I ordered the food, and it should arrive in an hour while I pick up the necklace.

Maybe I can breach the subject of kids again today. I really want to start building our family of two to three, then four, or even five, but Jenny hasn’t been on board so far.

“We are still so young; where is the rush?” She told me last month when I tried to talk her into going off birth control.
