Walking over to the sink, I wash my hands and put the seasonings away before heading outside. Gunner and Judge are manning the grills tonight.

“Hey, guys. The meat is all ready. Are the grills ready?”

“Yup. Go ahead and bring them on out.”

Spinning on my heel, I head back inside to the kitchen. “They’re ready for the meat,” I say as I pick up one of the trays.

“I’ll get the other one. The rest of the food just got done, so they’re on the warmers,” Sasha says and we both head outside.

Setting down the tray on the tables near the grills, I squeal when a large arm bands around my waist, pulling me back. “Timber!”

He leans down, nipping my shoulder. “You’ve been teasing me all day in this sexy as fuck sweater that shows off your delicious skin, skintight jean, and sexy knee-high boots. And to top it off, my property cut.”

A giggle escapes. I’ve been insatiable lately, wanting him all the time, and it seems he’s more than happy to keep up with me. We’ve already snuck off once today, but I want to enjoy the barbeque.

“Tonight, baby,” I hiss at him as I turn in his arms. “I want to hang out first. The next time we have a barbeque, I’ll probably have to be bundled up like an Eskimo if we sit outside.”

He pouts but leans down and gives me a kiss. “I’m gonna go grab another beer. Need anything?”

“Can you grab me a raspberry-lemonade?”

“You bet, Sunshine.” He kisses me again and lets go of me before heading inside.

Dad waves at me and I smile as I head over to him.

A week after Timber and I got married, Dad and I were finally to sit down and talk about everything that happened when I first arrived. While what he did and said still hurts, he’s been trying really hard to make up for it.

When I reach him, he pulls me into his side, and I wrap my arms around his waist, hugging him. He kisses my temple and goes back to talking about our upcoming Halloween drive.

With colder weather coming soon, we’re asking for donations of old coats, gloves, hats, snowpants and boots, the whole works. Then we’re going to do a Halloween drive for those that can’t afford new ones. This will be the first event I’m a part of and I’m excited to help.

However, a few minutes later, the hairs on the back of my neck stand on end, and I look around cautiously.

“Hey, what’s wrong, Baby Girl?”

It’s only then that I realize my entire body has tensed up.

“It’s probably nothing, but I feel like I’m being watched,” I whisper.

Out of the corner of my eye, I notice them all tense but then relax.

“Let’s get you,” he starts to say, but then a commotion off to the side of the property draws our attention.

My eyes widen when I see a guy peering over the top of the cinderblock wall with a gun.

Pointed straight at me.

I start to run and a couple of shots ring out. The next thing I know is I’m being tackled and we’re rolling on the ground as I hear shouts all around us and a few motorcycles starting up.

When we stop rolling, I stare at Dad in shock, but then notice his face is taut with pain.

“No, no, no, no,” I cry out as I push him off me, only to see a bullet wound on his side. “Dad!”

“Mae, here! Press this on his wound,” Patch says as he kneels beside me.

I take the towel, push back his cut, and press it onto Dad’s side. He winces, but I know I shouldn’t back off on my pressure. I don’t know much about bullet wounds, but I do know that.

“Sorry,” I say quietly, wincing as tears start to fall.
