“I’m coming with you,” Liam informed as he strutted towards us as if he was on a damn catwalk. I tried to hold on to my anger, but it was near impossible with the nonstop fluttering in my heart in response to his bright smile.

“Liam?” Michelle called as he walked in front of her desk. “There’s someone on the phone for you.”

“Tell them I’m out. Take a message.” He dismissed, his eyes permanently fixed on mine.

“She says it’s urgent.”

“I said take a message, Michelle.” His annoyed tone was firmer this time, but still, she didn’t relent.

“It’s your fiancé.”

Chapter 31

Jamie

Fiancé.

His fiancé?

No. It couldn’t be.

I looked at Michelle, waiting for her to correct her words, hoping for some kind of misunderstanding or misinterpretation. Maybe it was a strange code they used in the Mafia that had a completely different meaning than what the word itself entailed.

Something. It has to be something besides what I heard.

But Michelle’s features were as tied up in confusion as mine. So I focused my gaze back on Liam, his brows furrowed in a panicked knot, his hands stretched out towards me, his palms flat in a universal gesture that meant ‘calm down.’

Calm down? How could I calm the fuck down?

That look and gesture were all it took for me to know that there was no mistake. No secret code.

It was his fiancé.

With that single look, I knew it was true.

It’s your Fiancé!

It’s your Fiancé!

It’s your Fiancé!

It’s your Fiancé!

Michelle’s words were an echo ringing unrelentingly in my ears so loud it made me flinch. They bounced around in my brain, refusing to sink into understanding.

With every painfully sour breath I took, my heart sank deeper into my chest.

My knees grew weaker.

My soul died further.

My body was frozen, incapable of any reaction. I just stood there without so much as a blink, feeling the life drain from my face. The realization that Liam had played me sinking into my pores like acid. How could I have fallen head over heels for him? How had I been tricked into overlooking what I saw in him the first time we met?

I’d give my life up just for the chance to be with him. I had finally found a meaning for my existence. I was finally complete. Fucking happy.

And now?

Nothing.
