More relief. I was about to collapse from the fatigue.

Jermaine studied the park. “We have a few minutes before the supernatural community realizes what we did.”

She pressed her palms together and rubbed them three times. “Which human is getting the cranial scrub?”

I barked and pointed my snout at Phil. Fred stepped aside as Regina approached the unconscious man. She inspected his wounds, touched his chest where I had cracked his ribs, and then delicately touched his temples.

Orbs of pale yellow glowed at her fingertips as she whispered something in another language. It wasn’t a language I recognized, the syllables not quite matching up with the way her lips moved. Anita sat up beside me and draped her arm around my neck. She watched with as much interest as the rest of us.

Witches were gifted with magic. The practice eluded my understanding, but that didn’t diminish my appreciation. I watched until the orbs stopped glowing, blinking at the spots that remained in my vision.

Regina stood up with a sigh. “That should do it.”

“Will he remember anything from tonight?” Jermaine asked.

She shook her head. “If he tries, he’ll just think he got too drunk and passed out in the park. I healed his wounds and cracked ribs as well.”

I shifted into my human form, groaning at the soreness in my legs. “Are we leaving him here? What if he comes after Anita again?”

“I left him a suggestion to leave Anita alone,” Regina explained. “It’s a strong suggestion that will send him back to his home.”

“How did you manage that?”

She smiled knowingly while snapping her fingers. “By following the threads that led him here.”

I stared in bewilderment at the unconscious man.

Anita stood up, shakily grabbing my shoulder to steady herself. “Can somebody explain that to me like I’m a toddler? Real small words. Maybe whisper.” She cradled her head with one hand.

I wrapped my arm around her waist, shivering at the cold that was now biting my hot flesh. Sweat coated my skin, making the wind that much icier.

Regina stepped toward us. “From what Jermaine told me, Phil came to this town specifically to find you. I used his predisposition to drink in response to stress to manipulate his memories and thoughts. When he wakes up, he’ll think that he couldn’t find you and drank himself into a stupor. Then he’ll go home.”

Anita squeezed my shoulder. “What will send him home?”

“The free booze he can get at a bar near his apartment,” she replied confidently. “That man is obsessed with alcohol more than he is with you. It’s the strongest suggestion I can give him without it seeming too absurd to him.”

I shivered again. “How did you get here so fast? I texted Jermaine right before I took off for the city.”

Regina beamed. “Blake sent a gift last year thanking me for my help during the mate trial.” She touched a pendant around her neck, a dark stone that shimmered with a color I couldn’t name. “It can transport me to any city in the country.”

“Useful,” Anita commented. “Can it transport more than one person?”

Regina smiled apologetically. “No, I’m sorry I can’t take you all back to the pack land with me. But there should be room in Jermaine’s Explorer.”

I glanced at Kylie and Fred. The two of them were hooked at the hip. I got the feeling they wouldn’t be bothered by a sprint back to the pack land.

Anita rubbed my side. “God, you’re shivering.”

Jermaine jumped back to the car and returned with a coat. “Here, man. Sorry. Let’s get you both in the car before you freeze.”

“What about him?” Anita gestured to her ex.

Anger flared in my chest. “Do you seriously care what happens to him after he tried to kill you?”

Her eyes softened with hurt as she looked up at me. “Liam, I’m not like him. I never want to be like him. I refuse to be violent or cause unnecessary harm.”

My rage reduced as I held her gaze. “You have the biggest heart.”
