On his mouth.

“I thought I heard you might be down here working, Daisy. I’m so glad Hunter remembered his manners and invited you to stay here.” His mom smiled at him. “And your sister said Brielle is calling again.”

I snickered as I walked into the kitchen to do the dishes. I needed some sort of distraction from the kiss.

And his parents.

The water ran over the sticky pancake plates, and I got a strange satisfaction in watching the sugar dissolve.

It wasn’t like I hadn’t met his parents before. I’d met Hunter’s mom several times through the book club and around town and his dad at a couple of celebrations.

I just never expected to have her son covered in my lipstick when she popped by his apartment unexpectedly.

“What’s that all about with Brielle?” she asked. It became clear where Hunter got his directness, but I didn’t mind at all because I wondered that, too.

Hunter didn’t respond, so she smiled in my direction.

“How are you doing, Daisy?”

I turned around with a dishcloth in my hand and grinned. “Really good.”

“Have you finished the chapters for book club?” she asked.

Definitely a recon mission.

I shook my head. “No. I was planning on doing that this afternoon before my shift.”

His mom smiled wider and glanced at her son. “Why is she doing the dishes?”

Hunter’s eyes connected with mine in a quick plea for help, and I grinned. He had his hands full, but I loved every second of it.

I could feel how much his parents loved him.

And then a thought occurred to me. If I were in the guest room, how was this going to work?

His parents walked over to the living room and took a seat on the couch facing the lake, and I motioned for Hunter to come into the kitchen.

“What’s up?”

“With your parents here, I think I should stay at a hotel this weekend,” I whispered.

“Nonsense,” his mom yelled from the other room. “Hunter can sleep on the pull-out sofa here, and we will take Hunter’s room.”

Hunter rolled his eyes and grinned. “See? Problem solved.”

“I love having the Christmas carols on,” his mom continued, “but where are all your Christmas decorations?”

“Daisy already pointed that out. I’m headed out to grab a tree and anything else I can find.”

His mom nodded. “Sounds like fun. We’ll come with you.”

I hid a smile as Hunter looked exasperated, and I wiped down the counters. There was so little in life that got Hunter riled up. It was kind of fun to see.

“Help me,” he whispered, squeezing my hands.

“Not me. I’ve got eight chapters to read and a bartending gig later.”

“Fine. I’ll remember that when you need to be bailed out..”
