“At first I thought I would be collateral damage, but your dad and I had an instant connection.” Her eyes tear up as her mind takes her back to memories long ago.

“Instead of killing me, I married the man.” I snorted out as we both start to laugh. “The guy I was with, I found out that he’d been swindling money from older people, taking their life savings. The pain from that took a while to get away from.”

I don’t want to laugh, so I push hard on not allowing myself to. What happened to those older people is a hundred-percent shady, but what is amusing me, is she just watched a man being killed and she has more trouble about money swindling.

“I know dad’s not here right now but why am I the target? Why are they after me?” My mother cringes, her eyes glistening with unshed tears.

My mother nods at Mac, who quietly returned to the room. “There is a hit out on you, Taylor. Not just a low one, either, one of the biggest paydays for any assassin working.”

“How much?” I ask since Mac never gave the amount.

“Ten million.” I actually flinch when he answers.

“Why?” I don’t know why I asked. I’m probably not going to like the answer.

“You are the last of the Capponi line. Your known roots are dated back over eight centuries and according to our old tradition, only the true and pure members can claim their rightful spots. Only blood can bear the name, and wear the crown.” My mother continues to nod to encourage him to keep going. I would love to hear this from my father but I don’t want to wait.

“This family has a lot to do withThe Council, founding members. You are rich, Taylor, not the rest of us.” He starts laughing and so does my mom. “Your parents will have to beg for scraps of that two-point-three billion.” I’ve always loved Mac, he tries to make everything easier and simpler.

“You are the last pure heir. You have full control of it all, and only you. Your father relinquished his position years ago and unfortunately there are no other standing family members, even extended family members that rank this high.” This time Mac grabs my hand and squeezes, holding it while he continues to talk. “Your family has been hunted for years and I am so sorry, girl, it’s not going to stop anytime soon. If you take down one enemy, another one will pop right back up in their place.”

I’d be a liar if I said everything wasn’t overwhelming, as if I didn’t feel my world slightly crashing down on me.

“Unfortunately, I have some pressing matters to take care of, so I will have your friends sent back to you.” I stand straight up and give Mac a huge hug, putting my head to his chest listening to the familiar heartbeat of one of the founding members of my dad’s gym. These men have gotten me through my childhood.

My mom stands next to me, her once prominent eyes are creased, embodied in pain.

“Are you okay?” I ask her, she gives me a nod.

“Migraine. With all the recent events, I think I’m going to go lay down for a while.” She wraps her arms around me, I cherish the safe feelings cradled in her arms, like I did when I was a kid. We say our goodbyes as the door opens and my friends rush in, as my mother silently leaves.

They thankfully calm themselves, giving a slight nod of respect to my mom as they come in surrounding me.

“Is this your family compound?” We laugh noticing that it’s not the cleanest and it hasn’t been lived in for years. Joss definitely watches way too much TV. “Tell us everything,” she insists with a hand on her hip.

“Not much really to say.” I slap my hands together. “Oh, there is a ten-million dollar hit against me.”

“What!” Was spit out by several of my friends. I’m not sure who, but they managed to make it seem perfectly synced.

“I’m the last rightful heir.” My already rich friends, well except for Eden, give me a sly smile.

“Where is your father?” Eden asks looking around.

“He left to interrogate those guys that we saw earlier. He had them freaking escorted out of the school where they were sitting and brought here to the garage.” I nod my head just in case they don’t believe me.

“What!” Eden snaps out. I imagine I’m going to be getting a lot of that thrown at me for the next few days, at least until we figure out what the hell’s going on.

“I’m not exactly sure, my father thinks they’re involved in all this somehow, or maybe they’re the ones that are supposed to make the hit.”

“What the hell are we waiting here for?” Chance steps up to us, softly speaking those words. “Let’s go find them, instead of waiting and trying to figure out what’s going on.”

Pierce starts to screech. “Maybe we can watch ‘The actual fuckingGhost’in action.”

Everyone is excited while I feel a relentless amount of dread. “Are you guys three fucking years old?” They laugh softly and quietly push me out of the door they just came through and totally ignore the question.

Rich people are so boring.

When we first arrived at the house, I was more enamored with the building and the oldness of it, the character, that I’m shocked when we step outside. Men are sporadic but placed almost everywhere. We have absolutely no plan except to go for the garage, since it’s the only building away from the house and it has lights on.
