“Sloan,” I can actually hear the smile in his voice. “What the hell did you get yourself into this time? You never call me just to shoot the shit.”

I growl slightly. “Yes I do. I think I did that like ten years ago.” He starts laughing. “You up for a job? It’s guarding a safe house.”

“How long?”

“I’m thinking up to six months. I won’t give you the deets over the phone, but if you want to head up to New York, I’ll let you know all about it.” The last time I checked, Bobby was living in Virginia, so I’m not exactly sure where he is now.

“I’m in, send me the address, I’ll be up there in the morning.” He clicks off the phone. That’s the way that Bobby always is, short and sweet. Well never sweet, just short. I laugh more, this is gonna be fun for me to hang around those two. I’m pretty sure Bobby fucks with Remy to get a rise out of the poor soul, and it always works.

“He’s in,” I state to Remy who nods at me, holding up his phone showing me that the Long girls are in, too.

Remy and I are slightly on edge, even though we trust these people. We’ve worked with all three of them before. It’s still hard to work with others. That leaves spots open on your back for anyone else to slip a knife through. Maybe we just don’t play well with others, but we definitely need all the help we can get right now.

“Ana and Ava can stay at the school as students. We’ll get at least one of them in all of Taylor’s classes. Bobby can keep tabs on the safe house. He can keep track of the surveillance in case of an emergency.”

“Why do you keep looking at your watch?” Remy wonders at the same time I look up, then at my watch again.

“Antonio is leaving on an emergency meeting withThe Councilin a different country.” I actually let my smile shine bright, unnerving Remy as he watches and waits for the punch line. I never smile, it’s welcoming to most in my personal space.

“We get to inform Taylor of her new security detail.” Remy starts laughing now.

He calms himself before he chuckles out, “she’s gonna fucking hate that.”

She’s curious about me, even if she has a problem with me working with her, it doesn’t even matter, though, because I’m hired by her father, not her. It makes me laugh, because I realize from what the old tradition states, is that she has to pay me for protecting her, whether she likes it or not. She’s in charge of all the money. I know her dad has his hand in it, rightfully, which it should go to him because Taylor had no clue who she was until a couple days ago.

Remy and I spend the next several hours going back and forth between the house and the dorm rooms. We receive several weird glances, some of curiosity and annoyance. Students watchus, shuffling up and down the elevator with so many boxes and other things we might need.

We have weapons stashed and hidden in discreet boxes that can only be opened by fingerprints. Besides the occasional knife and stuff that are laying around. We’re being extremely careful with our live ammunition and everything else. Just as careful as all the guards stationed around.

I found out that Taylor convinced her father to let her go to school tonight so we don’t have much longer. I know she doesn’t know who’s going to head her security detail, but she’s gonna find out very fucking soon.

I smile inwardly, chastising myself, giving myself a stern lecture realizing I could be putting her life in danger if I’m too enamored with her. Nothing can happen now, that has to change. I need to keep focused and my head in the job or people will die, innocent, the ones that don’t deserve it.

Finally I sit down and relax, bringing a cold bottle of water up to my lips and letting it drain down my throat. Everything is in place and where it should be. Other shit can be taken care of later.

“Holy fuck man,” Remy shouts, starting to dance around the dorms. It’s funny, I know he can dance but right now the boy has no skill. He’s way too excited.

We get to stay on a college campus which is a dream for Remy. The twenty million can keep us well-kept for years to come, forever, especially if we plan it right. Use the money the way it’s supposed to be to expand our empire.

Remy starts thrusting his hip acting like a total idiot. “This is a job for the foreseeable future, it is only a job for me. There are no college girls involved. Repeat and understand there are no college girls involved,” I speak louder, my voice projecting over Remy’s loud dancing. The man breaks out laughing, his cheeks going red.

“Man, I think you need to go look in the mirror and tell yourself that same sob story.” I snarl at him.

“Nothing’s going to happen, I am one hundred percent focused and so should you be. This is the ultimate payday and earning respect from a man that we both admire.” Remy nods when I mention reference to ‘The Ghost.’ His mood slightly changes, if it was anybody else, I don’t know how well we would’ve respected it.

“Got it,” he says with a level of seriousness I haven’t seen in years. The last time he wore the same expression was when we decided to run away.

We both know what this job is, what it could bring us and what it could do for our future. Hopefully now, we manage to keep it, and not fuck it up.

Chapter

Twenty-One

Taylor

My father disappeared hours ago but the guards under his order take us back to the dorm room that night. I know he wanted to go with us but there is so much work to get done.

A college campus is no place to work when you’re trying to make sure that nobody kills off the remaining members of your family.
