“Probably?” Ruben asked. “You mean, you don’t remember having sex with her?”

Titan looked over at Ruben. “Do you remember every woman that you’ve ever had sex with?”

Seeing as how Ruben was in his late forties already, it was doubtful. Of course, I knew nothing about Ruben’s personal life, so for all that I knew, he might be married to his high school sweetheart. In fact, I didn’t know much about a lot of my coworkers.

“Well…I mean…no,” he stammered. “But her claims are only four or five months old.”

Titan looked between me and Opal. “My apologies,” he said before addressing Ruben again. “They all look the same once they’re inside the hotel lobby. Same face, same hair, same outfit, and same goal for the night. If they’re interested in more than one night with me, they’ve all been smart enough not to mention it.”

Wow.

“Well, condoms aren’t foolproof,” Decan said, chiming in. “So, if you did sleep with her-”

“That baby is not mine,” Titan denied vehemently.“Ifthere’s a baby, it’s someone else’s.”

“Unless you’ve had a vasectomy, you can’t know that,” Decan argued, and I felt like they were interrogating him. “And even then, they’ve been known not to take at times.”

“That baby isn’t mine,” he repeated, neither denying nor confirming if he’d had a vasectomy.

Conrad cleared his throat, sensing the tension. “I’ve asked Ruben, Decan, and Lux to all prepare a strategy for your particular situation, so how about we start with Ruben?”

Titan nodded, and my stomach tightened. I knew that this must be hard for him, but we were on his side, and he had to see that, right? The entire purpose of our jobs was to be on the client’s side, and we were the best at that.

“It’s too late to go on the offensive, so we hit back with outraged righteousness,” Ruben suggested. “We’ll dig into her background, past social media post, her current social media presence, and we can play it out as if she’s looking for money and nothing more. We’ll classify this as a money grab and seek her previous sexual partners if we have to.”

“So, going for the jugular,” Titan surmised.

Ruben grinned. “Exactly.”

Titan looked over at Decan. “And what’s your approach to this shitshow?”

Decan grinned. “I’m of the opposite opinion,” he answered. “I say we go at this with sensitivity. Play the victim. Say that you have no idea why this woman came after you, and how sorry you feel that she’s in a place where she feels that she needs to resort to such sad tactics. We’ll also mention how you would rather wait until the baby is born for the test results, because you also care about what might happen to the innocent child should an amniocentesis be performed.”

With Conrad at the head of the table, and Opal at the other end, Ruben, Decan, and I were all sitting on the left side of the conference table while Titan, Evan, and Jake were all seated on the right side. So, there was nothing in the way of me seeing Titan Miller pinch the bridge of his nose, clearly not happy with either strategy.

Flippin’ great.

Straightening in his seat, those searing blue eyes shot my way. “What do you have for me?”

My lady bits wanted to raise their hand, but I quickly tapped that down. “I think you ought to say nothing.”

You could hear a pin drop in the room.

Titan arched a brow. “Really?”

“It’s not a secret that you take your privacy seriously, Mr. Miller,” I told him after having stayed up most of the night, researching everything that I could on Titan Miller. “In fact, your entire family is very big on their privacy. Apart from what you can’t control, mainly what you do on the field and out in public, the rest of your life is lived behind closed doors.” Those blue eyes of his were regarding me carefully enough that I almost squirmed in my seat. “If you make any lengthy statements, they’re going to automatically ring false to anyone that has followed you and your career over the years.”

Titan leaned forward in his seat, placing his tatted-up arms on the table. “So, you’re not a fan of defending myself or playing the victim?”

That was an unfair question because my answer would make it seem as if I wasn’t giving Ruben or Decan any credit for their work on this case. I was no better at my job than they were, but it was clear that they hadn’t researched Titan when Conrad had given us this assignment.

“I’m a fan of you being you,” I answered, taking the diplomatic way out. “People are going to be expecting you to deny it or admit it, but why? Why do they deserve an answer from you? While they deserve and are entitled to your best on the field, your fans don’t own the rest of you.”

Titan chuckled. “That sounds like something that Raven would say.”

Ignoring that, I said, “I suggest that you make a short statement that simply asks for privacy at this time. Maybe assure your fans that this…situation won’t affect your concentration on the field, but that’s it. The less said, the better.” I leaned back in my seat this time. “No one can twist your words if you don’t say any.”

Those blue eyes of his held me in place. “Can I ask you something, Ms. Lelan?”
