“You don’t know shit,” she spat, glaring at me. “Do you realize what you’ve done?”

I crossed my arms over my chest. “What’s so wrong with being my girlfriend?”

Her green eyes bugged. “You cannot be serious, Titan,” she squawked. “There is no way that this isn’t going to blow up in our faces.”

“How do you figure?”

“Because nothing is a secret if more than one person knows about it,” she flung back. “Do you seriously believe that the truth isn’t going to get leaked?”

My arms dropped to my sides. “Not by my camp, it won’t.”

Her green eyes narrowed at me. “I trust my family with my life,” she informed me. “However, all it takes is the right dollar amount to make someone else crack.”

“Well, that leaves Opal,” I said, breaking the news to her. “There’s no way Evan would risk me dumping him as my agent, and there’s no way that Coach or Jake would risk losing me as one of their star players.”

“Opal’s entire reputation is at stake here, too, Titan,” she replied. “There’s no way that she’ll say anything.”

“Then it looks like our secret is safe.” I shrugged for emphasis.

“We have to pretend to date,” she pointed out. “Does that not bother you at all?”

“No, it doesn’t,” I answered honestly. “Why would it? It was my idea.”

“You’re giving me a headache,” she bit out, and I watched her as she started to pace the room. “This is so fucking ridiculous.”

“What is?”

Lux stopped pacing as she turned towards me. “You’ve made me the‘understanding girlfriend’as you’re accused of fathering an illegitimate child, Titan. No woman in her right mind would want to be in the center of such a public clusterfuck.”

“Rachel’s claims are before you came into the picture,” I reminded her. “So, it’s not like I cheated on you, Lux.”

“We’re not dating!” she yelled. “How can you cheat on me if we’re not even dating?!”

“Wearedating!” I yelled back. “As of ten minutes ago, we’re dating!”

“Oh, my sweet Baby Jesus,” she muttered to herself. “This is insane.”

“Look-”

“Two weeks,” she said, looking back up at me.

I scowled. “Two weeks, what?”

“We’ll break up in two weeks,” she said, making my back snap straight. “We’ll say that the pressure from the accusation was too much for me to handle, so we decided to part ways. We’re still friends, yada, yada, yada.”

“We’re not breaking up in two weeks,” I informed her, already feeling like this was more than a pretend relationship. The more time that I spent with Lux, the more attracted I was to her. “It will make it look like I’m guilty of fathering Rachel’s child. Or worse, it’ll make it look like I’m unfaithful to you.”

Lux ran her hands through her blonde hair. “Then how long do you propose is appropriate enough?”

Before I could answer, Lux’s phone started ringing, and I watched her let out a heavy sigh as she pulled it out of her purse. She shook her head, and I waited as she let it go to voicemail, then fire off a text to whoever was calling.

When she slid her phone back in her purse, I asked, “Who was that?”

“Who do you think?” she snapped. “It was my best friend, Lita.” My back muscles relaxed a bit. “I imagine my family will be calling next. It’s all over the news now.”

“Tell only who you have to,” I reminded her.

Her green eyes were shooting fire my way. “How long is this supposed to go on, Titan?” she repeated. “I have a life that I’d like to live on my own terms, you know.”
