Sawyer took out his wallet and handed Xander a twenty, then picked up the bag and one of the coffees. “Keep the change.”

“Thanks. Have a good day.”

J.T. and Sawyer both mumbled a response, then left the bakery and crossed the street again to J.T.’s truck. Sawyer got into the passenger seat.

“That guy’s a little too friendly for me.”

J.T. closed his door and set his coffee in the cup holder. “Apparently, he’s a really nice guy.”

“According to who?”

“Sage and Joey.”

“Sage is still eyeing that guy?”

J.T. shrugged. “I’m not sure.”

“The five kids didn’t scare her off?”

“You would think. I’m not sure what the attraction is. Joey thinks he’s all that, too.”

Sawyer took a sip of coffee and nodded. “It’s the unavailable thing.”

J.T. looked at him. “Meaning?”

“Women are attracted to unavailable men.”

“So that’s your problem. You’re too available.”

“Funny. I’m pretty sure I’ve dated more the last few years than you have.”

J.T. started the truck. “According to Joey, most of the women in town want me.”

Sawyer laughed. “Wow. Did she tell you that?”

“Yeah.”

“Hmm. She’s just reeling you in, man.”

J.T. nodded. “Maybe. But I think I’m fine with that.”

“Even at the expense of breaking the hearts of all the women in Castle Springs?”

“Yep.” J.T. pulled onto the street. “I need to stop by the trailer for a minute.”

“Did you leave the iron on?”

J.T. laughed. “I borrowed a book from Granddad last week, which he borrowed from Lucy. Now Ember wants to read it.”

“Would I like it?”

“You might. You’ll have to get in line, though. Dad’s probably next.”

As they approached Joey’s house, J.T. spotted an older model Buick parked behind Joey’s car. “Is that Freddy’s car?”

“Yeah. I think so.”

“I wonder what the hell he wants.” J.T. slowed down, then pulled into the drive when he saw Finn out in the yard by himself. He parked and left the truck. “Hey, buddy. What’s going on? Why are you out here by yourself?”
