“Since we have a son to think about. I think the M word should be the way to go.”

She thought about it for a moment. “I agree. But I don’t want to rush into it. Can we date for a while? Go out on that second second date?”

“Yes. But after that, we need to stop calling it our second whatever. It’s going to get cumbersome.”

She laughed. “It already is. Although last night was our second, second time.”

He pulled her down next to him. “No more seconds. Let’s go for a third.”

“When do we need to get Finn?”

“Sage is giving him a riding lesson this morning. Then Granddad is making grilled cheese for lunch. We have hours.”

“Hours? We may be able to get in a fourth.”

At one o’clock, J.T. drove Joey to the ranch to pick up Finn and her car. When they arrived, they saw Finn on the back of Sunny, who was a step up from Oakly, but a lot less horse to handle than Gilley. Considering he was only five, he was doing really well.

Sage was in the middle of the pen, holding a lead line to keep control of the situation, but Finn had advanced to holding the reins. J.T. and Joey went to the fence and stood next to Sawyer, who was watching Finn and Sage.

Sawyer glanced at J.T. “You finally remembered where you left the kid.”

“Dad told us to come after lunch. So here we are.” He watched Finn for a moment. “He’s doing good.” He smiled as Finn rode around the pen and he felt an overwhelming pride. That was his son, and like the rest of the O’Connells he seemed to love riding. Is being a cowboy hereditary?Seems like it might be. He glanced at Sawyer.Well, maybe not.

Sawyer nodded. “He’s coming right along. He rode all morning, and he wanted to get right back on after lunch.”

Finn spotted Joey and J.T. and gave them a quick wave. “Look at me.”

Joey smiled. “You’re doing great, honey.”

J.T. added, “You’re quite the cowboy.”

Sage stopped Sunny, then led him to the fence. “This guy is learning fast. Another few lessons and he’ll outgrow Sunny.”

Sawyer smiled at Finn. “Do you want to show your mom and dad some speed?”

Finn nodded. “Yeah.”

Sawyer climbed the fence and Sage led the horse over to him, then he got on the horse behind Finn’s saddle. Sage removed the lead line as Sawyer took the reins from Finn. He was basically riding bareback with his feet hanging well below the stirrups.

“Okay. What do you say?”

“Giddy up!”

Sawyer clicked his tongue and gave Sunny a squeeze with his legs to get him moving. Then Sawyer urged him into a fast trot. When he broke into a lope, they circled the pen several times.

Joey took J.T.’s arm and put her forehead on his shoulder. “I can’t watch.”

“You have to watch this. He’s having a blast.”

Joey looked up and watched Finn and Sawyer lope around the pen. “They’re going so fast.”

Sawyer slowed Sunny down, then walked him to the fence in front of J.T., Joey, and Sage. He patted Finn’s leg. “Good job, buddy.”

Finn was beaming. “Did you see how fast I was going?”

Joey nodded. “Wow. That was super-fast. I’m very impressed.”

He looked back at Sawyer. “Can we do it again?”
