She tried not to let his adorable crooked smile get to her. “My brothers and I are headed to Billings, and we’re in need of junk food.” She put up a hand. “Not that your pastries are junk food.”

“What’d you have in mind?”

“Two bear claws and a blueberry muffin.”

“That’s not going to get you very far.”

She tapped on the top of the display case. “You’re right. How about five chocolate chip cookies and three lemon bars?”

“That should do it.”

She pointed at him. “And I’m paying for it. Camp is over.”

“Okay.” He boxed her pastries. “Do you need coffee?”

“Three tall coffees. And some cream for one.”

He poured the coffee and set the cups next to the box he’d filled with her order. “I haven’t seen much of you. I thought we decided we were going to be friends.”

“We did. And we are. I’ve just been busy. But now that camp is over, you can expect a visit or two a week.”

“Good.” He put a stack of napkins on top of the box. “Looking forward to it. What’re you doing in Billings?”

“It’s kind of a secret. I guess. Not that you’d tell anyone.” She sighed. “My brother is shopping for a ring.”

“Oh. I see. So he and Joey worked things out?”

“Boy, did they ever.”

Xander laughed. “Good for them. I’ll keep it to myself.”

“Thank you. I guess we’ll be needing a cake at some point.”

He nodded. “Just let me know when.”

“Thanks.” She took a card from her wallet.

He took it and looked at the name. “You’re not Jacob today.”

“No. I decided to be Sage for this purchase.”

He ran the card and handed it back to her. “Have a safe trip.” He looked at the three cups. “Do you need help getting this outside?”

“Um…do you have a cup carrier?”

“Sure. Don’t tell me your brothers are still worried about me.”

“I don’t think so. I just don’t want to give them any reason to go there again.”

“And me helping you carry coffee to the truck might give them the wrong idea?”

Sage laughed. “With my brothers, you never know.”

Xander put the coffees into a cup holder. “Here you go. Can I at least get the door for you?”

“Yes. Please.”

He walked with her to the door, and opened it, then waved at J.T. and Sawyer in the truck. They waved back, then Sawyer got out of the truck as Sage got to it. He watched Xander go back inside.
