“How’d that go?”

“It went fine. He’s a nice guy.”

“Yeah. So everyone says.”

“You guys really need to get over the whole Xander thing. What if someday, when all of his kids are grown and gone out of the house, he and I become a couple?”

“Wow.” Sawyer took a cup from the holder. “If that highly unlikely scenario happens, then I guess we would owe him an apology.”

“Why is that such an impossible thing to happen?”

“Do you really think he’s going to wait fifteen years or so for you?”

“You never know.”

“Actually, I do know. In fifteen years, he will have found someone willing to take on his five adopted children and probably added a few more to the mix.”

Sage frowned. She wasn’t sure why the thought of Xander finding someone to settle down with upset her. But it did.

J.T. cleared his throat. “While you two argue about stupid stuff, can I get my coffee, please?”

Sage handed him a cup, and he took a sip, then put it in the cup holder next to the steering wheel. “Can we pretend like we’re mature adults and talk about something else?”

Sage handed him a napkin and a bear claw. “I can if he can.”

Sawyer took the box from her and looked inside. “Geez, Billings is only three hours away.”

“We can save some for the trip home.” She looked at J.T. “So, here’s a change in subject. What kind of ring are you going to get?”

J.T. shrugged. “I have no idea. That’s why I brought you guys.”

“Have you talked to her about it?”

“No. We have precious little time together. We’re not going to spend it talking about jewelry.”

Sawyer laughed. “Yeah. We know how you spend your time together.”

Sage nudged him in the ribs. “Are you jealous?”

“A little bit, yeah.”

Sage shook her head. “You guys are such guys. I swear.” She sighed. “I think you should go with something simple. But elegant.”

J.T. picked up his cup. “That doesn’t make sense, Sage.”

“Of course it does. A single diamond. A carat should do it. And a gold band. Maybe with a few small diamonds on it.”

“So by simple and elegant, you mean expensive?”

“An engagement ring is not the time to be cheap. She’ll be wearing it for the next fifty years or so.”

“I didn’t say I wanted to go cheap. I was just clarifying.”

“You’ll be spending a lot of money today. How’s that?”

“Clear enough.”

J.T. wasn’t happy with anything they saw at the first three stores. He wasn’t sure what he was looking for. But he knew when he saw it, it’d be a clear and obvious choice. Sage’s suggestion of a single diamond and a band with a few more, seemed like the way to go. He’d seen a few sets like that, but they weren’t the right one. He was holding out for the right one.
