“Yeah. Like that.” He looked at her. “They only serve beer here.”

She lifted the paper cup with a lid and a straw she’d brought with her. “That’s why I brought a Coke with me.” She watched Freddy serve some customers. “Do you think Freddy knows?”

“If…and it’s a big if. Or at least an unknown if. If the kid was born five years and a few months ago, then yes. He has to know. Unless he’s an idiot. And I don’t think he is. Which means if this is a big family secret, then he’s in on it.”

“It’s so wrong.” She sipped some of her drink. “What are we going to do about this?”

“Nothing. It’s not our place to do anything about it.”

“Does J.T. think it could be his?”

“He’s in denial. He says there’s no way she’d keep it from him.” Sawyer studied her for a moment, then put his elbow on the table with his hand raised. “I need an O’Connell promise from you. You need to leave this alone.”

She sighed, then hooked her pinkie finger through his. Then they bumped fists, slapped hands, and shook. “I promise.”

“I’m leaving on the tenth. So keep me informed if anything goes down.”

“I will.” She frowned.

“What?”

She tapped the table with her fingers. “I’ve gotten used to you being around. This past year, you’ve only had four fights.”

“Are you saying you miss me when I’m gone?”

“Yeah. I do.”

He smiled. “Well, I miss having you there in Missoula. It seems really far away now that I’m there and everyone else is here.”

“Do you miss us enough to stop boxing?”

“I didn’t say that. But I need to go all in or give it up.”

“Are those your only two options?”

“Yeah.”

“What does going all in entail?”

“Moving to Seattle or San Francisco. Even better would be Los Angeles.”

“You can’t do that.” She looked at the table for a moment. “I’m sorry. Of course, we will all support whatever you decide. But that’s really far away.”

“I know.”

“And if you give it up?”

“Then I guess I need to learn how to love cows.”

Chapter eleven

"Hopefully, I give off he married vibe now."

Genny walked up to Brady Miller’s produce booth. He and his brother Rory owned the grocery store in town, and Brady ran the produce department. Genny had known Brady all her life. He’d never married, and she’d been single for years since her short-lived marriage ended in divorce. But until the last year of so, Genny had never paid Brady much mind. He was just Brady Miller, the boy she had a crush on when she was fourteen and never thought about in that way since. But lately, she’d begun seeing Brady as something different. Which surprised her. At forty-six, she figured she was destined to be single the rest of her life. But watching Jake with Ember made her realize it’s never too late. Her father even had Lucy, though that relationship was still undefined and probably always wouldbe. But Brady? She’d continue to tread slowly and see where it went.

While Brady was busy with someone else, Genny looked over the selection of strawberries. When Brady spotted her, he walked over to her.

“Good afternoon, Genevieve.”
