Finn finished gobbling his muffin, then pushed his chair back from the table. “Can I go play outside?”

“Sure honey. We’ll be out in a minute. Stay right in the yard.”

She watched Finn run off, then looked at J.T. “It’s going to take time. You need to give him time.”

“I realize that.”

She nodded and got to her feet, then began clearing the table.

“Did he ever ask why he didn’t have a dad?”

“A couple of times.”

“And what did you tell him?”

She set some dishes in the sink, then turned to look at him. “I told him his father lived far away.”

J.T. felt himself getting mad at her again and he got to his feet and picked up his hat. “I’m going to go keep an eye on him.”

“I’ll be out in a few minutes.”

J.T. nodded and started to leave, then turned back to her. “I’m never going to be able to forgive you for this, Joey. But I’ll try my damndest to not let it get in the way.” He turned then and headed for the porch.

When he went out the front door he saw Finn holding a scruffy gray cat.

“What do you have there?”

“A cat.”

“Is it yours?”

Finn shrugged. “I don’t know. I just found him.”

“Um…maybe you should put him down.”

Finn dropped the cat, which scampered under the house. “He’s a nice cat.”

“Maybe. But he looks kind of wild. If you want a cat, we’ll find you a tame one.”

“Really?”

“If it’s okay with your mom. You need to ask her first.”

Finn put his hands on his hips in a move reminiscent of his mother. “She likes cats.”

“Well, then maybe she’ll be okay with it.”

“Do you have a cat?”

“No. I have five dogs, though.”

Finn’s eyes grew big as he dropped his hands to his side. “Five dogs? Cool!”

“They don’t live with me. They live with my dad. But they’re still partly my dogs.”

“Can you show them to me sometime?”

“Yeah. Of course I can.”
