“But I have to ask my mom first?”

“Yeah. It’d probably be a good idea.”

Joey came through the door. “Ask me about what?”

Finn ran to the steps, but didn’t go up them. “If I can meet J.T.’s five dogs.”

“Oh. I’m sure we can make that happen sometime.”

“When?”

“Soon.”

Finn nodded, then ran off.

“You still have five dogs at the ranch?”

“Yeah. You know four of them. Only one new one. Ira. We got him about four years ago after Silas died.”

“Silas died?” She frowned. “I always liked Silas.”

“He was old when you knew him. We lost him not long after…you left.”

She was quiet for a moment. “Was it peaceful?”

J.T. nodded. “He fell asleep one night and didn’t wake up again.”

“Your Granddad must’ve been really sad. Silas was his dog, right?”

“Yeah. He didn’t want anything to do with Ira. But Ira had other plans. Ira now sleeps with Granddad.”

Joey smiled. “That’s sweet. I liked your granddad. He was always nice to me.”

J.T. scowled. “We were all nice to you.”

“I wasn’t implying you weren’t. Your dad was great. Sawyer and Sage were fine. I have no animosity toward any of them.” She looked at him. “I suppose they don’t like me so much anymore.”

“Like you said, Josephina. It’s going to take time.” He watched Finn for a moment. “You need to give them time.”

Chapter seventeen

"You really need to stop stalking that guy."

Sawyer was making a feed store run, and Sage and J.T. were meeting him in town for lunch. Sage came in a little early in order to drop the application forms for the horse camp off to Xander. She found sponsors for all five of the children for both sessions. The Three Oaks Ranch was covering two of them. They tried to sponsor at least one child every summer and Sage was happy they were able to help out.

When she entered the bakery, she found Joey and Finn at the counter.

Joey glanced back and took a moment to recognize her. “Oh, Sage?”

“Yeah. How are you doing, Joey?” She smiled at Finn. “And you must be Finn.”

He nodded. “How do you know who I am?”

“I’m J.T.’s sister. He told me all about you.”

“Oh. Cool.”

Sage looked at Joey. “Welcome back.”
