“Thank you.” She took the change Xander set on the counter and picked up the box of pastries she bought. “Nice seeing you again.”

She headed for the door and sage watched them until they walked past the window. Then she turned to Xander.

He was grinning at her. “Not close friends, I take it.”

She scowled. “Stop trying to read me.”

“Sorry. It’s just so easy. I hope you don’t play poker.”

Sage cocked her head. “I just welcomed her back to town. How can you read that as a negative thing?”

“It’s the way you welcomed her.”

“Welcome back?”

He shrugged. “I could be wrong. What can I do for you?”

She sighed. “Fine. Joey isn’t my favorite person.”

He smiled. “Do you want to tell me why?”

“You’ll hear soon enough through the Castle Springs gossip train.” She set the forms on the counter. “I brought these for you. The kids are covered for camp. You just need to fill these out with their information.”

“Covered like…completely covered?”

“Yes.”

He looked at the forms. “I didn’t expect that. I can pay for some of them.”

“It’s taken care of, Xander.”

“Well, thanks. I really appreciate it.”

She nodded. “They’ll be gone from eight to four, five days a week. So basically like they were in school.”

Xander shook his head. “You’re a lifesaver.”

“I was happy to take care of that for you.”

“I told the kids about it and they’re super stoked. Most of them, anyway. Olivia is a little skeptical.”

“I help with the younger kids. Olive’s age. If Olivia would feel better helping out as a junior counselor, I can make that happen.”

“I feel like I need to repay you somehow for all of this.”

Sage thought for a moment. “Muffins and bear claws.”

“Excuse me?”

“You can keep my brothers and I supplied with muffins and bear claws.”

Xander laughed. “Done.”

“Okay. Get those forms filled out and drop them off with Lydia at the hardware store. She’s Dutch’s wife. She does all the paperwork for the camp.”

“I’ll get them to her tomorrow.”

“Great. Camp starts a week from Monday on the sixteenth. When is school out?”
