“The sixth.”

“So you just need to figure out next week.”

“I can do that.”

“And if you’re interested in going to the campout, it’s on Saturday the twenty-eighth. You’d have to close on Saturday.”

“Parents can come?”

“Parents are encouraged to come. Usually about half of them do. Mostly fathers.”

He smiled. “I’ll be there.”

She raised an eyebrow. “Have you ever ridden a horse?”

“Yes.”

“Oh right, my dad said you rode at the ranch when you used to come for the summer.”

“Yes. I did.”

“Have you ridden since then?”

“No. But I’m sure it’ll come back to me.”

“I guess we’ll see.” She tapped the counter. “I’ll be in soon for your first installment.”

“Muffins or bear claws?”

“A couple of each.”

Her hands were resting on the counter, and Xander put his hand over one of hers.

“Truly, Sage. Thank you.”

“It’s my pleasure, Xander.”

Sawyer and J.T. were walking down the sidewalk toward the café when Sawyer nudged J.T. and motioned at Freddy, who was headed for them.

J.T. grumbled, “Shit.”

Freddy stopped walking as Sawyer and J.T. approached. “Sawyer.” He scowled. “J.T.”

J.T. stopped walking. “That’s really all you have to say to me?”

“What do you want me to say? That I’m sorry?”

“It’d be a start.”

“It’d also be a lie.”

J.T. took a step forward. “What makes you think you had the right to keep my son away from me?”

Freddy smirked. “I did what I felt was the right thing for my daughter and her son. If I had my way, she’d still be in Boise and you’d still be out of the picture.”

J.T. moved forward another step and Sawyer put a hand on his arm.

Freddy stood his ground. “The second you screw this up. Which you will. I’ll be stepping in and taking control of the situation.”
