Sage laughed. “I’m kind of sorry I missed this altercation. Was Freddy scared?”

J.T. put a hand on Sawyer’s shoulder. “Wouldn’t you be if this guy got in your face?”

She glanced at Sawyer. “He’s not that scary.” Sawyer reached over and put Sage in a headlock. She squealed and pounded on his arm. “Let me go.”

He let go and grinned. “Not scary, huh?”

“Not in the least.” She leaned toward J.T.

He pushed her back. “This is between you two. I’m staying out of it.”

She scowled at him. “You’re not my favorite brother anymore.”

Sawyer laughed. “Does that mean I am?”

“No. The as yet unborn child of our father will become my favorite sibling.”

“That works for me.”

Chapter eighteen

"So, there's really no downside?"

Ember spent some time looking for Jake and finally found him working on the door to the chicken pen. She watched him for a few minutes while he was unaware of her presence. When he bent to get a tool from the wooden tote sitting on the ground, he spotted her.

“Hey. What are you doing?”

“Watching a cowboy at work.”

“Hmm. This isn’t really cowboy work. It’s more ranch hand work.”

“So why is the boss doing it?”

“There’s never a ranch hand around when you need one.”

When she went to him and put her arms around him, he dropped the hammer he was holding and pulled her in close.

She smiled at him. “How much longer is it going to take?”

“About five minutes. Why?”

“Finish up and I’ll tell you.”

He kissed her, then she stepped back, and he picked up the hammer. He pounded in two horseshoe nails, then tugged on the chicken wire.

“That should do it.” He dropped the hammer into the tote. “Now, what did you come out here to tell me?”

“I think it’s time to take the test.”

He grinned. “Thetest?”

“Yes. Are you ready to find out if we’re going to have a baby?”

“Hell, yeah. Do we need to go into town and pick one up?”

“No. I bought one the other day while I was in Lincoln.”

“Lincoln?”
