“Yeah. I didn’t want everyone in town talking about Jake O’Connell’s wife buying a pregnancy test.”

“Good call.”

She took his hand. “Are you ready?”

“Let’s go.”

They walked around the barn, crossed the yard, and went in through the mudroom door to the kitchen. Jacob was on the phone, and he ended the call and smiled at them.

“Joe Riggs has that horse ready to look at. Do you want to take a ride with me? I’d like your opinion on him.”

“Um…I’ve got something to take care of. Maybe Sage can go with you. She has a good eye.”

Jacob cocked his head. “Since when don’t you want to look at a new horse?”

Jake put a hand on Jacob’s shoulder. “Dad. Take Sage.”

He raised his hands. “Okay. Don’t let me keep you.”

Jake nodded and Ember smiled as they left the kitchen.

Jacob watched them go, then looked at Ira, who was under the kitchen table. “I don’t even want to know what those two are up to.”

Sage came through the back door. “Hey, Granddad. Is Dad around?”

“He and Ember are busy with something. What do you need?”

She leaned on the counter. “I was going to see if he wanted help with the chicken coop. He wasn’t too happy about having to do it. All the men are out with the herd.”

“I’m sure he got that done. Does that mean you’re looking for something to do?”

“Yes, and no. It depends on what you had in mind.”

He grinned. “I could use your help checking out a new horse?”

“Don’t we have enough horses?”

“Child, you can never have enough horses.”

“Okay. Let’s go.”

They went out the back door and Sage glanced at Jacob. “Dad didn’t want to go look at a horse?”

“Apparently, he’s got more important things to do.”

Sage glanced at the house before getting into Jacob’s truck. “You don’t suppose…”

“It’s the middle of the day, Sage.” She raised an eyebrow, and he said, “I guess you’re right.”

“Maybe they just have something important to talk about.”

“Right. That’s probably it.” Jacob started the truck and smiled to himself. That’s whathaving a young wife will do for you.

Sage nudged him. “Granddad, stop.”

“What?”

“You know what. I don’t want to think about that stuff. Not about Dad.”
