Chapter twenty-one

"I'll just sit here and play with Wonder Woman."

J.T. and Sawyer had been following the fence line for over an hour. So far, there were no breaks in the fence or any spots in need of repair. Sawyer hadn’t asked him how things were going with Finn and Joey, and J.T. appreciated it. His brother knew when he was ready, he’d talk about it.

When they spotted a knocked over post with the top wire hanging loose, they rode their horses to it and dismounted. Sawyer went to the post and stood it back up. He stomped the ground around it as J.T. came to him with a sledgehammer. Sawyer took it from him, then gave the post a solid hit. It sunk into the ground a couple of inches. He hit it again, then J.T. tried to wiggle it.

“Solid. All that working out comes in handy sometimes.”

“Yeah. That’s why I do it. So I can sink fenceposts.”

J.T. reattached the wire to the post, then checked the other two below it. They all seemed tight and secure.

He looked at Sawyer. “Let’s have some lunch.”

Sawyer scowled. “We just got started.”

“I know, but all I had for breakfast was a cup of coffee.”

“You headed out on an all-day trail ride without eating breakfast?”

J.T. shrugged. “I had other things on my mind.”

“Such as?”

“Get the lunch and I’ll tell you.”

Sawyer went to his horse. “Fortunately, Granddad packed us enough food for a week so we can eat again in a couple of hours.” He took a canvas tote from his saddlebag and brought it to J.T. who was sitting on a fallen log near the fence they’d just repaired. Sawyer sat on the grass a few feet in front of his brother and dug into the tote.

J.T. took a sandwich from him. “Thanks.”

“Are you ready to talk about it?”

J.T. took a bite of his sandwich. “Joey told him last night. Finn knows I’m his dad.”

Sawyer smiled. “Well, that’s cool. What’d he have to say about it?”

“He had two questions. Was I going to live with them. And…can he call me dad.”

“No, and hell yeah?”

“Pretty much, yeah.”

“That’s great, man. How’s it feel?”

“Good. Weird. Terrifying.”

Sawyer laughed. “You’ll be fine. You’re going to be a great dad.”

“I guess we learned from the best.”

“I believe we did, yes.” Sawyer took a drink from a water bottle. “How’s it going to work with Joey? Can you two get along for the kid’s sake?”

“Yeah. It’s been okay. She’s really sorry for what went down. At least the whole not telling me about Finn. As for our breakup, it was a long time ago, and I think we can move past it.”

“Good. When do I get to meet him? I believe Aunt Genny and I are the only ones who haven’t met him.”

“You saw him at the beer tent.”
